CWGC Ambon War Cemetery - Indonesia. Images of all graves/names-on-memorials are now available.

    1. A c5 hour flight from Jakarta - with one stopover in Ujung Pandang (Sulawesi Islands) - will eventually bring you to the Maluku Islands and hence, the town of Ambon. A taxi-ride from the local airport into town is well recommended as it takes you around the bay area and past the cemetery, which lies about 5-6 kms north of Ambon - on the bay road. Time-zone here is Jakarta +2 hours.
    2. Built on a former Dutch army camp (Tan Touy) which then became a prisoner-of-war camp, the cemetery faces the bay area and is beautifully maintained. Very large trees with overhanging branches manage to keep most of it shaded from the hot sun.
    3. Today, there are many military camps in this region and it's not surprising to discover that they - the Military - are amongst the top 3 employers here.
    4. There are c2,000+ graves in this one cemetery, over half of which are Australians. In addition; there are c800 Royal Navy and many Air Force personnel, including c200+ Dutch and Indian servicemen.
    5. The Ambon Memorial lists over 450 Australians who died in the region of the Celebes and Molucca Islands and have no known grave.
    6. The Cross Of Sacrifice has been removed - for some reason - and I have sent an email to CWGC querying this? They eventually replied that it had been damaged in a bomb attack, some years back, and they hope to replace it in due course.Since replaced with a stone of remembrance - update March 2013.
    7. Many of the Royal Navy men who are buried here served on HMS Exeter, Encounter, Stronghold, Prince Of Wales, Electra and Jupiter.
    8. The Gull Force Memorial is also situated here.
    9. There is a ''collective grave'' here of 8 airmen: 7 Australian and 1 American.

    Images now available include:

    A. All c450+ names on the 10 panels in The Ambon Memorial (please provide panel number when requesting image/s)
    B. General images of the cemetery itself.
    C. Images of all c2,000 graves (which includes Commonwealth, Dutch and Indian graves).
    D. Images of both the Gull Force Memorial tablet and the shelter building housing The Ambon Memorial.
    E. Images of Ambon Town and airport.

My sincere THANKS to the Staff at CWGC Ambon who - without prompting - were kind enough to clear memorial tablets of fallen leaves and twigs. Due to monsoon rains and winds - and prior to taking an image - it can take additional time for a photographer to carry out this particular task. Their assistance is very much appreciated.

Attached to this message are a total of 2 images...resized.
All above images are now available - FREE - to family members, relatives, researchers and historians. When asked, I normally suggest that you make a donation to a Forces Charity of your own choice.

Not wanting to hijack a thread but the title is relevant.

The National Archives of Australia (NAA – www.naa.gov.au) holds burial cards for many of the personnel buried in this cemetery – Australian & other Commonwealth plus Netherlands (KNIL).

The cards provide the normal service details on the member plus any information on the search for the remains and any reburials etc. Sometimes on the back of the card is information regarding the cause of death.

The cards are normally filed in plot sequence and using the CWGC will provide info on what plot number to search for.

Hopefully one day this info might be of assistance when doing research into somebody buried in this cemetery.
