Cudmore Grove was in the news today regarding a landslide.
In WW2 it was heavily defended with Coastal Guns and pillboxes many of which have fallen into the sea.
Next to it was West Mersea defended by 373 Battery Coastal Artillery.
HQ 10 Coastal Artillery Group was at Clacton.

    Re: HQ 10 CAG
    Aug 1942
Bdr HN (Bill) Beadle 373 Bty West Mersea (later Lieutenant 67th Fild Regt)

"The Adjutant rang up from Clacton in a state of great excitement and demanded an officer.
Regretfully I had to tell him I could get one in a quarter of an hour – a hopeful estimate.
Thereupon he blew up in the best Adjutant style and asked for the Sergeant Major.
Enquiries showed that this gentleman also was missing and after a few purple passages and
injunctions to “get an officer instantly”, Clacton rang off."

Being a quiet night, the officers had slipped out to the Yacht Club for a game of Billiards,
unknown to them the Battery Sgt Major had slipped off to see his girl friend later to be his wife,
leaving Bdr Beadle in charge of the Battery as the Sgt was away on a course.

He must have created an impression by organising the battery to turn on the searchlights and lay the guns on the targets (Motor launches from Brightlingsea)
before the officers and BSM got back. He was later posted to 123 OCTU then 67th Field Regt.

More about 10 CAG and football:
    May 1941
"then was suddenly informed I was to go to Clacton in the afternoon to play football for
the 10th CAG (Coastal Artillery Group) against the Lancashire Fusiliers.
We raked up quite a useful team but theirs was really hot stuff.
They had two first division pro’s and three lesser lights and what was more important
had played together through the season.
