During WW2 was a fighter station and on 15 August 1940 was attacked in an air raid, by mistake, they intended the nearby RAF Kenley. Things will probably have changed, but in the foyer of the College of ATC at Bournemouth Airport the pre-war ATC log books for Croydon were displayed. From memory the most common entry was for aircraft that (incorrectly) turned to the right after landing.
Was watching an old episode of Dempsey & Makepeace the other day where Makepeace has to fly a plane. Checked the aircraft reg. Thanks Owen, I was just about to turn in and now you've turned my thoughts to Glynis Barber ! My old dad worked on the Croydon airfield site before he was called up...spraying oxygen cylinders and I think for Rollason Aviation...I recall a story about someone walking through the rotating props of a Rapide. Not the safest place to work, even when the Luftwaffe weren't beating it up.
