Hi to all! I am conducting research about the Crotone airfield under Allied service. Crotone is a town on the eastern coast of Calabria, South Italy. In September 1943 the airfield was taken by the 1st Canadian Infantry Division. I would like to know if anyone could provide me with documents regarding RAF and other Allied air forces using Crotone as a base during WW2 (Units, duties, etc.). Sometimes Crotone is named Cotrone by Allied operational records and maps. I would like also to know about veterans memories and pictures taken there.
    With best regards

    Hello Kroton,

Here's a bit of information to be going on with:

    United States Army Air Force
On Wednesday 15 September 1943 79th Fighter Group Headquarters moved from Sicily to Crotone with its 85th, 86th and 87th Fighter Squadrons. 87 Squadron left on 4 October and 85 and 86 left on 5 October for Salsola.

    Royal Air Force
426 Squadron moved to Crotone during February1944 and was renumbered 614 Squadron in March 1944.
2857 Squadron transferred from Sicily to Crotone in mid-September 1943. It was disbanded in November 1944.

    Regards
