This memorial was just 100 metres or so from the apartments i stayed in in crete, It is all in Greek but I was told it depicts British and Anzac names as well as Cretans. Also told that they hold a service every year. Usually a Brit or two and the occasional kiwi/ Oz turns up.

Girlies don't really enjoy the battlefield bit, managed to take her to CWG at Souda Bay and took her to Chania and ended up going in the museum there. Good exhibition and story and Pics about battle of Crete 1941. Cost me a couple of Ice creams tho, but it was worth it, lol. Got nice pics of Souda, the entrance, cemetery and looking out to the bay from the cemetery. Not a bad place to be laid to rest.

    Hi,

Nice photo of the monument. Set me resarching. Am off on a war greaves pilgrimage with a difference in September 2008. For past two decades I have travelled the world seeking out the lost, forgotten and remote Commonwealth war graves. It all started in Suda Bay and I am returning but this time to visit the towns/villages of the civilians who shouted "NO SURRENDER" and died for their courage. Although I have much information on civilian memorials I will be grateful for any more details.

Was it in Crete that Patrick Leigh Fermor captured a German general with Cretan partisans ?
I think a film was made about it .

I believe he is still trying to finish his trilogy about a 1930's walk from London to Constantinople .

    Hi Trimconalee
Was interested in what you posted about Patrick Leigh Fermor as i was kindly sent a dvd about a kind of "This is your life" about him, it's in greek and it shows neally all the resistance that helped him capture the General it also has Kriepe in it

    Greetings!
As far as gen. Kreipe is concerned, there are severals docs made in the last 30-40 years. Of a lot of interest though is a Greek film of the 60s, "The Island of the Braves". In fact -desides the plot- demostrates very clearly the particular mentality of Cretan people!
    Cheers!
