    Hi,

I came across this chaps CWGC burial record while looking for another man. Original Border Regiment enlistment in the early 1930’s per his army service number.

Corporal John Edwin Hatch | War Casualty Details 2648206 | CWGC

I had little knowledge of Pioneer Corps units who worked in close contact with frontline troops so I was surprised to read of the role of several Pioneer Corps companies providing smoke cover for attacking infantry.

This reproduced commemorative document outlines the contribution of Pioneer Corps to the activities of BLA from “Normandy to Berlin”

Cpl Hatch died of wounds 11th April 1945. He was subsequently awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in the action where he was wounded - a recce on 10th April 1945 to look for a suitable “smoke” location to support a river crossing by Canadian troops.
