To some one who could help me.
I would like to know how I could find out about my father.s Army days, ie, where he went, what he did etc. He never talked much about it, and now he is no longer alive, I have now way of asking him. I have is army number, but am clueless as to know what to do. I long to know about that part of his life. If anyone can tell me how to go about this I would be very grateful. I know he was in the Royal Engineers, Thanks very much.

First off - this is not a big problem as you are a good part of the solution all ready with the fact that you have his service number and that he was in the Royal Engineers - and since you are - hopefully - close to his Next of Kin - it might be yourself - the NOK can now apply to the Glasgow Records Office for his full records which will tell you most of what you want to know. This will ususally tell you what he got up to in the Army - at least officially !

Next of course there are a few people on this Forum who know their way around these records - as they are always written in Army hieroglyphics- and are always willing to help.

So first things first - find the Next of Kin - save up 30 pounds - contact Glasgow and as I can't put my fingers on the address at this time - someone else will be along when they wake up in the am and fill you in with the details...OK ?

    Cheers

    Hi Tom
Thanks for your info, Yes I am his next of kin. Eldest child of four. Is it still Glasgow even though he lived in London? (sorry to be so ignorant of these things) I do know that he was in a tank corp. It is great that its sounding so easy. The beginning of his army number is the word "sapper". I am really looking forward to learning a bit more about that part of his life.

    Thanks again Carole

Now that you are next of kin - you are more than half way there - call that number in Glasgow and they will send you the forms - although they can be downloaded on the Pc - just fill them in and send off a cheque for 30 pounds - then sit back and wait - and wait - and wait some more and eventually they will drop into your mail box - hopefully before you are too old to read them......If he was a sapper - then we won't hold that against him as we have another one on here - nothing but trouble !
    Just kidding Brian !
    cheers
