This is a recent donation to our museum collection. It came in with pieces of shrapnel, shell casings, belt buckles, and other items that were found on Guam in the late 90's. All the other items have been identified. This one has us stumped. The balls are made of lead and are loose, the base, I believe, is steel. Any info would be appreciated.
Looks like caseshot/ grapeshot to me but I wasn't aware of it's use in WW2 or the theatre mentioned... Most definitely some form of anti-personnel projectile though.
sir, while i'm not exactly positive, it reminds me of a portion of a cluster bomb/ artillery round probably post ww2.
I'll look it up, but I think the 37mm gun in an M5 Stuart could fire cannister. Edit: It could, see M3 37mm AT - 37mm Anti-Tank Gun - History, Specs and Pictures - Military Tanks, Vehicles and Artillery
pusher plate from the inside bottom of a japanese shrapnel projectile ORDATA Online: International Deminer's Guide to UXO Identification, Recovery, and Disposal and you can see the indentations on the image attatched here .. ORDATA Online: International Deminer's Guide to UXO Identification, Recovery, and Disposal note these show a 75mm shrapnel but there was a 3inch one as well which would obviously have a smaller pusher plate
