    Hi,

I'm trying to find out some details of my wife's 80 year old grandad's father, who died in september 1942 and is buried at suez war memorial.
Ideally i would like to get a picture of his grave but any information on what his company did would be a great start?

Hi Terry and welcome to the forum.

Here is his units war diary covering the time of his death. The diaries are kept at the National Archives just outside London.

WO 169/5372 1003 Docks Op. Coy. 1942 Jan.- Dec.

    Hi Terry,

The name basically says it all. They were responsible for the construction and maintenance of docks. I did a quick check in the R.E. official history and I found a 991st who were recorded laying down road mats on the beaches for the ships to unload on.

Type Port Operating Company into Search and it should show on the second page of references Trux/RE/Port and Inland Waterway units. This has a War establishment for the Port Operating Company. The unit was composed mainly of stevedores, with a few crane operators, for loading/unloading ships.

Thank you Guys for giving us a head start.
How do you get the war diary from the national archives?
Last question, i promise, does anyone know a good website to get good pictures of suez war memorial or even better his grave?

Thank you all for your help, once again :)

Click here for a general shot of where he is buried ---> CWGC :: Certificate :poppy:

Where do you live? The National Archives are just on the London border with Surrey. You can visit for the day and copy files. Alternatively you can pay someone to copy them for you.

    Hi Drew,

I'm very impressed with your quickness on replying and knowledge.

I live in coventry so it may be a bit hard to get down there. Do you know how much it costs and anyone who can do it?

    Thank you once again
