What scale is that one? The Airfix one is 1/48 scale. Retails for about £30. I spent about £40 on resin detailing for the interior. Lovely kit, very very nice for Airfix!
And I must say what a fantastic aircraft, the footage on youtube is quite spectacular (made even better by the fact i used to live about 10 mins drive from Boscombe Down Test Centre)

A great aircraft, well ahead of its time, there was one on display at Duxford some years ago, probably still there.

It's still there, I believe it's been restored recently.

I heard theres one at Filton? But I thought only one survived...maybe im thinking of a conversation about where the original aircraft were kept. I think shes fantastic and if she flew again it wouldn't do any harm!

There is also one at RAF Cosford for those in the North of the UK.:D

Particularly fond memories as I started my Toolmaking apprenticeship at BAC, Preston just after it was decided to scrap it by the new Labour Government.

A great pity for the RAF that this plane was scrapped as they never received the planes they were promised in return.

But that is the world of Politics and another story.

    Thanks for the link Tom

the TSR2 has always fascinated me due to the fact we were still in an austere time and yet we managed to produce a top class piece of kit

It's generally best not to mention the thing at all H... blood pressure among the elderly and all that ;).
He has the Airfix 1/48 kit of it, I'm intrigued to see how a model comes out when assembled by a man constantly muttering about Harold wilson...

And just to add wood to the fire...what at the time was the enemy warsaw pact aircraft it would be up against.. When it raises its nose cone im always surrounded by the facts and figures of the comparable yankee model of time ...What red equivalent was around at the time and more importantly what red force would it have come up against..Any one know.. who wins the fight? Blimey ..no what if though unless owens not looking.

I like bit where on reheat on 1 engine he leaves a Lighting behind with both engines on reheat

Funnily enough, I had a TSR2 kit at the time. It wasn't until I went to Cosford about three years ago that I realised just how BIG it was! Thinking back, that kit must have been 1/144.

A lovely bird. Am I right in thinking she had Concorde engines?

I read Phoenix or Folly a good few years ago and it had some interesting points on why it was sort of specified and built into a bit of a blind alley.
Low flying and Nuclear capable yet Mach 2.2 ability. Small wings yet expected to be able to fly at extremely high altitudes.

Buccaneer did the low level nuke thing and the Phantom did the high level interception thing... And then the Navy got sole control of the nukes anyway...

That lot, along with the cost over runs and management problems made it a no brainer for cancellation.

Without checking I am not sure of the engines fitted.

I remember it being spoken that a lot of TSR2 Technology later went into the Concorde.

As far as I can remember the TSR2 was also fitted with a radar for ground hugging, which back then was cutting edge technology.

All wasted and the RAF never received the F111 which was to replace the TSR2.

Blood pressure raised just thinking about it.

I am not saying they were right to scrap it, just that alternatives were found or its role as a nuke carrier was negated by the Navy getting the nukes.

I had always railed against the scrapping and as Tom said, it makes the blood boil, but its original specification called for such an all rounder it could never have been made to fit the bill. That successive reviews of its requirement changed direction meant it was ham strung before the fist jig was laid.

    For example.
Think of an extreme high flying reconaisans aircraft and you think U2.. long thin wings. Think of high speed... small wings...

Firstly the mission profile for the tactical strike was High, Low, High. then it was changed to Low, High, Low and then changed to... well... low, low, low

They tried to add "Interceptor" to its list of abiilities in the hope it would stave off the axe but Britain had foolishly moved to the view that the missile could do anything a plane could do (total folly IMHO)

And yep, it would have scared our Soviet friends. Nothing was to come close to it for over 20 years. One "what if" I do have, is If she had have made it into production would Burgess, McClaine et al have given the plans to their spymasters and would there now have been a TSR2ski? ! ;)

Agreed. Not quite the same thing but they had a F-111sky in the shape of the SU-24.
