Hello everyone, convoy ETM-14 departed Southend 19 june 1944 and arrived Seine Bay 20 june 1944 ; composition 14 merchant ships and 4 escorts. The convoy was shelled on 20 june between 02h17 and 02h31 (according german documents) while passing Dover Straits. One ship was slightly damaged. Can someone tell me which one ? Composition of the convoy (according Arnold Hague convoy database) given below : DERRYCUNIHY (Br) 7,093 1944 EKINS ESCORT 19/06 - 20/06 EMPIRE CANYON (Br) 7,058 1943 EMPIRE DUKE (Br) 7,240 1943 FORT LIVINGSTONE (Br) 7,135 1942 FORT RAE (Br) 7,132 1942 FORT SLAVE (Br) 7,134 1942 FORT YALE (Br) 7,132 1942 GEORGE WYTHE (US) 7,191 1942 LOOSESTRIFE ESCORT 19/06 - 20/06 NARCISSUS ESCORT 19/06 - 20/06 OCEAN ANGEL (Br) 7,178 1942 OCEAN VAGRANT (Br) 7,174 1942 OCEAN VENGEANCE (Br) 7,174 1942 SAMYORK (Br) 7,219 1943 VIVACIOUS ESCORT 19/06 - 20/06 WILL ROGERS (US) 7,200 1942 WILLIAM A JONES (US) 7,176 1943 Any help is welcome. Someone with access to fold3 might help by looking up this page from the Admiralty War Diaries: Admiralty War Diaries, 6/1/44 to 6/30/44 › Page 508 - Fold3.com Michel
Thanks RosyRedd ! That doc may have been the source for Claude's (martin75) info in the first place, hence the lack of details Interestingly, the German source as quoted by Claude says "between 0217 and 0231", whereas the Admiralty War Diaries say "between 0218 and 0335". A typo in one of the reps maybe?
Typos always possible! This was the page that you linked to Michel. I checked for all the names of the vessels that Claude listed. Nothing showed up in the search results to show any of them had received any damage. They were mostly linked to earlier dates
Just found this website and it appears none of the Fort ships mentioned in the convoy were damaged so that leaves fewer to check I guess Fort type ships - War Damage & Losses TD Not sure it was any of the Ocean type ships - Ocean ship - Wikipedia No mention of the incident by HMS Vivacious - https://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-10DD-09VW-HMS_Vivacious.htm HMS Narcissus - https://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-20Cor-Flower-HMS_Narcissus.htm
I can find no reports of the shelling, which of course doesn't mean that they weren't shelled. This convoy was mostly concerned with the NWly Gale that was blowing throughout the journey.
The damage was probably too small to be mentioned. In June 1944, two US Libertyships (William L. Marcy and Matthew T. Goldsboro) were hit by shrapnel while crossing the Dover Straits (on 13th june and 25th june) but these episodes are hardly ever mentioned : no loss of life and no great damage probably being the cause .
