Hi folks, I've found an obituary in the Ormskirk Advertiser (dated 8 Feb 1945) for Colin Boumphrey, key details are in the following snippet:He served with the R.A.F. in the last war, when he gained the D.F.C., and also in the present one, but he was compelled to resign his commission owing to ill-health. Later, he joined the Aughton Home Guard, and subsequently the A.R.P., in both of which he took a very active interest.

He's not listed by the CWGC so far as I can tell, but taking the above at face value it looks like me may be eligible on one or more counts. What might be the best way of finding out, bearing in mind that I'd rather not spend too much money on this?

As he left the RAF due to ill health before the outbreak of WW2 this would have no bearing on CWGC recognition.

The best that you could hope for is that his death was due to enemy action or the result of enemy action which may be able to get on to the CWGC civilian ROH. Everything hinges on the cause of death; in this case I would not be too hopeful.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys!

The London Gazette says "placed on the retired list" - would that date be his actual date of retirement from the RAF?

The local obituary isn't clear whether or not he was active with the Home Guard and/or the ARP at the time of his death - if that happened to be the case, would that not make him eligible for CWGC recognition?

That would be his actual date of retirement from the RAF

With regard to Home Guard service if he died on duty from any cause then he would get CWGC recognition; if off duty it would have to be from a cause contracted on duty.

If ARP he would have to have died from enemy action or the result of.
