I have p/c of my father's army records but am puzzled as to why his record ends with his being in reserve till June 1936 then dicharged, after his service from 1924 to 1929. As he would have been 34 years old in 1939 would he not have been enlisted again? (not in a reserved occupation as far as I can tell). would he have had the same army number if he had enlisted again? Have I only got part of his military records? I don't recall asking for his full records as I thought I would get them all anyway. Any help anywhere? Thanks.
Hello and welcome to the forum. There are several forum members with an interest in the Guards Regiments. Until they see your thread and get back to you, you may find this web site worth contacting. The Guards Museum - Family Research Also the Coldstream Guards Museum has a link for direct email questions. The Coldstream Museum - Berwickshire Regards Tom
To be honest I wouldnt contact the Guards museum or the coldstream musuem, the Coldstream are a London Regiment... the first time the Coldstream were in Berwickshire since they were formed was when the 2nd Bn visisted in 1941. RHQ is your only real bet in these situations. Enlisting again did not mean that they served in the same regiment, a lot of men ended up all over the place.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. My puzzlement about my father's military service comes from the fact he had war medals incl. 1914-1920 War medal; 1914-1920 Victory medal; 1939-1945 Defence medal; 1939-1945 War medal. He was born in 1905 ! Maybe the first 2 medals were his father's? But he must have joined up again when WW2 started.
Hi, I think I posted some info in relation to your fathers service in China? My father and grandfather served as regulars in CG and I have their WW2 and WW1 era papers. It would appear that your father enlisted in 1924 for 12 years service - usually 4 years with the colours and then 8 on the reserve (his discharge would be delayed by active service in China) - so that by 1936 he had fulfilled his military obligations and would not be liable for recall as a CG "reservist". I stand to be corrected but he would have been at liberty to re enlist in any Regiment in 1939 rather than be obliged to offer his services once again to Coldstream Guards. If you have the medals you mention you should be able to make out a regimental number on the rim for the WW1 medals and as you say they are likely to be your grandfather's medals. You can apply for his service record. WW2 medals did not have anything on the rim - to save money. I presume that you got your fathers record in your possession from Wellington Barracks? Again I stand to be corrected but if your father re enlisted in another regiment - even if he retained his CG number by disclosing his previous service on enlistment - presumably in the series 264???? - or revealed nothing and was allocated a new number - his 1939/45 service papers for a "line" regiment would be retained by MOD rather than at Wellington Barracks. It may be more expense but a solution may be to apply to MOD to see if any records are held there for your father. It would be interesting if you could scan your fathers papers? What is your grandfathers regimental number? Likely to be a 4 or 5 digit number as Guards 264 series army numbering did not start until between 1919/1921. Are you aware of Great War Forum in relation to WW1 matters? Hope all this is helpful. Steve Y.

I understand there are records in the London Archives of prisoner of war that may have filled out forms with data on when they we released I thank any one very much who maybe able to help me. I do have records from the office of the Cold Stream Guards but it is still not enough information to help me. Thanking you for any help Omri Name: R. Morris Rank: Lance Corporal Army Number: 2657596 Regiment: Coldstream Guards POW Number: 11957 Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: XX-A Camp Location: Torun, Poland Record Office: Coldstream Guards Record Office, 75, Ashley Gardens, London, SW1 Record Office Number: 1
Hi Omri, I went to the National Archives last month and retrieved my late fathers POW questionnaire. Not all returning POW's completed the form - I went looking for my father and 3 others (all Guards) and only found 2. There is not alot of detail to trace relatives - only home address on my Dad's - nor relatives names. Your best bet would be to apply online for his Red Cross papers (ICRC) from Switzerland. It is free but takes about a year before you get a reply - mine arrived the week after I had been to National Archives in London and they corroborated the information. If I had the IT skills I would attach the link but I am sure a forum member will be along shortly to do so. In relation to your request for a look up of the POW questionnaire I would suggest that you open a new thread in the Prisoner of War sub forum with details from your most recent forum entry. Hope you find the above advice hekpful, I have attached P1 of my Dad's questionnaire to show the lack of family detail. Regards, Steve Y.
