what ever happened to the glider that was built or was being built in colditz?and any one remember what the name of the movie was in which it was seen being built?seem to have messed up my thread sorry
It was called the Colditz Cock and it never flew. The American Army liberated the camp on 16 April 1945, before an attempt could be made. Some have said that it was being held in reserve should the Germans begin to execute prisoners. The Russians controlled the area later and no one knows what became of it. The film was The Birdmen, 1971, naturally with American stars.
The 'Colditz Cock' has been reconstructed and flown for two separate British TV documentaries both shown on Channel 4 and available to see on their website as far as I know. In the most recent version, shown last year, the replica was actually launched from Colditz Castle. It made it across the river but unfortunately the pilot was decapitated when it crash landed. Luckily he was only a dummy. There is at least one forum thread about this.
I once posted an article and photograph I took about the replica glider in the Imperial War Museum, London, soon after it was put on display quite a few years ago. I remember that it looked extremely impressive. Regards Tom
