I snapped these pictures this weekend. Nothing to say what kind of radar equipment etc. Thought Bod, Adam and the Vehicle experts may like to see them and perhaps tell us what they are. I could see that the vehicles were MAN and a Soviet make, more than likely early cold war vehicles, but just guessing really. Regards Tom
Nice pic's Tom....The Eastern Block truck (On the right) are of a Russian Ural truck. The more modern one looks like German Military for some reason....I'm wondering if I've seen it before whilst on a tour. Regards Andy
Andy, I thought it was Russian, looking at the radiator letters. But I did not wish to show my ignorance. Regards Tom
The last time I saw one of those was on the 'Long Wat Round' motorbike adventure with Charlie and Ewan. It was fjording a fast flowing deep river in the middle of nowhere in Eastern Russia and it made it to the otherside...Awesome bit of kit
Very nice Tom. The M.A.N. is a 630L2A. From Vanderveen... Introduced in the late 1950's as NATO standard 5-ton all-terrain truck. Some 30,000 were built, in several versions.. including this radar equipped version.
Bod, Thanks for the identification, I just knew you would have the answer. There are more vehicles and equipment on the west side of the site which I can photograph on my next visit if you are interested. Regards Tom
The Soviet vehicle is a Ural 375 with (I think) a "Long Talk" ground controlled approach radar, which would be deployed at airfields. Where did you see these ?
Could be yes...the reference photo I found was not very clear...it's been a while since I did vehicle recognition !
The Soviet vehicle is a Ural 375 with (I think) a "Long Talk" ground controlled approach radar, which would be deployed at airfields. Where did you see these ? Owen, Well spotted. CH, They are located at the Luftwaffen Museum at Gatow, Berlin. As you enter the grounds they are all to the right ahead. It appears to be all cold war material including early missiles. I will photograph the lot on my next trip there and post all the pictures. Regards Tom
Alex, says it's a Ural 375, I agree with him & China now, as look at the front grill, it's more 375-ish.
I was in the team that made the first mobile Radar set. Built on a trailer with a half circle scanner, It was built right from Scratch insides a enclosed area. Inside an admiralty Establishment. By Decca radar. Mr Berry the man in charge. The trailer had 4 stanchions that would be secured to stop the trailer vibrating in use. All work stopped in that, when a Robin made her nest on top one of the stanchions. It was also the time when we built Decca marine radars. When I was a young and handsome fellow. If Ever! Huge Grin.!
