    Matthew was born : 1908 Cockermouth,Cumberland.
1911 Census : Matthew was living at 37 Helens Street,Cockermouth aged 3. With his parents Matthew and Mary Hannah Skillen with 4 sisters Catherine 13, Sarah Hannah 10, Annie Mary 8, Marha 1. And a brother Thomas 5.

Matthew married Olive M Stephens in 1929.

Andy had an educated guess from what the war diarys said as they were poor,

He was fighting on the Begues-Furnes canal when he was killed. His body was moved to the cemetery in 1943. If you read the cemetery history is was requistioned by the Germans from a local and turned into a cemterey. I believe this was to stop locals from turning single graves into shrines with flowers etc.

And a big thankyou to Jonathan for finding this chaps details. Also picture of Walters grave stone from Jonathan cheers pal very much appreciated.

Picture of Walter comes from 'The Whitehaven News Yearbook' and courtesy of the County Records Office in Whitehaven. And also a big thanks to Joseph Ritson for sending me the picture.

The census of 1911 Walter was named Moffat so by the time he enlisted he changed his name to Atkinson. The question now going through my head is why did he change from Moffat to Atkinson. As he was born in1898 and sadly died in 1916 if my maths are correct he was only 18 so did he lie about his age ? and this is the reason why he changed his name and probably made himself a couple of years older as stated on his CWGC headstone of being 19 but the family headstone states 18. And as his MIC states he went overseas in 1915.

Thought i would finish Cockermouth Cemetery with my granda Wee Albert from whom brought me onto this great forum to find out what he did and got up to in the war. See you soon wee Albert.

Have you written up your grandfather's wartime story yet? I deduce he enlisted firstly into the Border Regiment and subsequently transferred to the Royal Engineers?

Was Granddad enlisted in 1939 and was initially with the 5th Battalion (TA) The Border Regiment when war broke out? If he lived in the Cockermouth area I would have expected he might have gone into the 5th Borders.

As you may know I have researched many of the stories of the 5th Border fellows. The 7th Battalion was spilt off from the 5th Bn soon after war broke out in 1939 and became essentially a training or 'reserve' battalion.
