Hello, I'm Guass, new on this forum, and delighted to read you guys ! I'm 21, I'm french (sorry......) and passionnate about the RAF. Reading a french magazine about the Short Sunderland yesterday, I read a couple of times about basis on the lough Erne (Castle Archdale) and RAF Killadeas. After some research, I got very little info: Former RAF Castle Archdale-Lough Erne / Currently Castle Archdale Camp Site & Castle Lough Erne Yacht Club I would like to have as much info as you guys could provide me, and I'm in advance very gratefull. I would especially like to know what remains can be seen from the WWII basis nowdays, as I travel very ofter to NI, and would love to see that with my own eyes. Good bye, Guass.
Bonjour Guass, Bienvenue au forum, j'espère me retirer à votre pays un jour. I' ; m sure un membre appelé James S pourra vous aider qu'un peu avec votre recherche en tant que He habite en Irlande du Nord. À la votre Andy
Hello Drew, thanks for yout answer. Bonjour Guass, Bienvenue au forum, j'espère me retirer à votre pays un jour. I' ; m sure un membre appelé James S pourra vous aider qu'un peu avec votre recherche en tant que He habite en Irlande du Nord. À la votre Andy May I correct your mistakes in French ? I'll expect the same corrections from you as soon as needed please.... So there you go: "Bienvenue sur le forum, j'espere passer ma retraite dans votre pays un jour (you could have said dans TON pays as well, you can use TU with me, I know, tu/vous is complicated for native english speakers...). Je suis sur que que James S pourra vous (or t') aider un peu avec votre recherche, puisqu'il habite en Irlande du Nord." Hey, I read a couple of messages from James S, and i noticed he's from County Down, that's a funny coincidence because the reason why I'm focusing my aeronotical research on Northern Ireland is because my girlfreind is from NI, and in fact from County Down.....what a small world ! Regards, Guass PS: if you're interested by learning about war in the air in french, I am the happy moderator of a french forum on the subject: Aviation Ancienne
Guass , I am Co.Tyrone , about 20 miles from Castle Archdale / Lough Erne. I have a fair amount on the base and ops from there , would be happy to tell you what I can - might not know everythiong but could get you started.
Welcome Guass, I am from Co. Down but know nothing about RAF in NI. Good luck with it all, sure James and Peter amongst others will be of help. D
Guass , I am Co.Tyrone , about 20 miles from Castle Archdale / Lough Erne. Ah, ok sorry, I think I got confused, I read someone's else profile from Co Down i think ! Well, James, fire ahead basically all what you have ! Seriously, first if you have a description of the basis (with map and photos if possible) it would really interest me. Second, if you have a report of the ops from there, and maybe the list of lost aircrafts, i'd be more than gratefull. Thanks. PS: I found this: Joe O’Loughlin » Blog Archive » Catalinas at Killadeas But it doesn't talk about the Sunderlands.....
Guass , I gave Joe this info - I know him quite well and would exchange data on a fairly regular basis. I can post here or send to you which ever works for you. A very beautiful place to be based but Lough Erne extracted lives in term of operational and operational flying. 43/44 were very costly years - aircraft and aircrew being lost on a regualr / monthly basis. What do you need in terms of the history of the bases ? Aircraft losses a few things just to check out - loss of a Sunderland from 422 which forcelanded / ran aground in iceland being one but beyond that most can be given very quickly.
I can post here or send to you which ever works for you. Post here please, in case anyone else is interested. What do you need in terms of the history of the bases ? Well, first of all, I'd like their exact location as I tried to look it up on Google Earth, but there's not that many obvious signs I could see, appart from a sort of concrete platform on the east side of Gublusk Bay. Second of all, a quick history of the units that were posted there, and the dates. Thank you very much for your help.
