Could anyone advise on whether there was a single date in the 1950's when those that had been released under Class A release were discharged from service or was the discharge date equal to release date + x number of years / months

    Regards

    Hi,

The usual release date from recall post war that I’ve seen stamped on service records was on attainment of 45th Birthday.

    From my dad's records -
    a. Released to Class W.T. Royal Army Reserve on 6 Dec 1945 (Class B Release) (although authority was dated 4 Oct 45!).
    b. Discharged on completion of engagement: authority: TA Regs para 234-1. Allocated to the Army General Reserve Group P and eligible for recall to age 45. 10 Feb 1954.
    c. Discharged from Reserve Liability 30 Jun 1959.
His age on each respective occasion was -
    a. 27 yrs
    b. 35 yrs
    c. 40 yrs

As you can see, although he was posted to the General Reserve on 10 Feb 1954, he was in fact released some 5 years before his 45th birthday.
It may be that they took into account that anyone who was called up at the outbreak of war and had served throughout the whole of the war (as he had) had served long enough.

    Hi,

Thanks for posting that - whilst the rule was on attaining 45 years it was clearly varied in the late 1950’s.

An uncle born 1907 was discharged 1952 but my father born 1918 was discharged 1959. I have both sets of service papers.

What a coincidence, like your uncle my dad was also born in 1918 and finally discharged 1959.

Thanks for the responses; the airman I am currently researching was discharged on his 45th Birthday. There is mention of the Navy, Army and Air Force Reserves Act 1954 so I am assuming that this set out the terms and conditions etc. I will have to do some digging to see if I can find a copy

UPDATE: Just found this "The Navy, Army and Air Force Reserves Act, 1954, laid down that any men who had served in the forces since the outbreak of war, including those who had completed their service under the National Service Acts, should be members of the Reserve until they reached the age of 45, or until the 30th June, 1959, whichever was the sooner."

Thanks for the additional reference re the "Navy, Army and Air Force Reserves Act, 1954" - which explains the differences between transfer to the Reserves and age on final discharge dates which I, and others, will have seen on various records.
