Hi all, Presently I am in Northern Ireland fortunate enough to get access to the internet. I talked with Nigel Montgomery this morning and will be talking again with him on my return to London next Wednesday. I will then be able to post details about his rebuit Mark III's movements. Of interest, a production company, which has been commissioned to produce six one-hour programmes for the BBC, will be filming the event. Each is about an Irish Regiment which fought in WW II - this one about the North Irish Horse and the Hitler Line battle. Our good friend Paul will be there. Cheers for now, Gerry Gerry
HI Gerry - thought you would be around shortly - can't make it to the UK this time but I shall be with you in spirit to cheer you on - Rick is also looking forward to meeting with you at Bovvy- then on to say hello to Sapper and Shiela at Swanage- that film of the NIH at the Hitler line will no doubt show the loss of your 14 Churchills on the first day...that will take your memory back a bit Cheers
'Malplaquet' which according to my notes Gerry identified as from 51st RTR HQ Troop (image from The War Illustrated, 02 Apr 1943 pg 645) I'm sure someone will correct me if I noted it down incorrectly.
Dianne - you are quite correct with Malplaquet - 51st RTR stemmed from the Leeds Rifles - and finished the war in Italy as an Armoured /Engineer battalion with Hobart's "funnies" when the 25th Bde was broken up around Christmas '44 along with 142nd RAC and 145thRAC in 21st Bde - then NIH took the place of 145th. Incidently the infantryman lying on the mudguard was lucky as the centre section was the first thing to go before any action as it would be shot off and usually would tend to jam the turret- so off it went - but Malplaquet was from HQ so they didn't have that problem ........battle bowlers on ...... Cheers
