"I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest." Radio broadcast October, 1939. Well WC got that right, pity Joe Stalin was slow on the uptake.
Just read Winston's eulogy about Neville Chamberlain to the House of Commons: Public Speaking Tips - Neville Chamberlain Eulogy
I wonder what the great man would say if he could see the amount of the graffiti left on his statue in Westminster today by so called students in their so called protest. Churchill was in my eyes a great leader who was the man for the job during the war. To mess up what that statue represents in my eyes is an insult beyond words...... Let's hope these 'people' in time reflect on what they've done and realise just how much of an insult this to our nations history.

The wonderful irony of that graffiti I'm sure is totally lost on those morons. Maybe Winston would be amused and possibly proud that his statue is now a beacon for free speech, however misguided. Kids in China would not have the same latitude with Mao.
This would fit for Winston: A university president, speaking to a gathering of his colleagues, offered the following advice: 1. Be good to your A students - some of them will make you famous. 2. Be good to your B students - some of them will come back and teach for you. 3. Be good to your C students - many of them will send their children back to you. 4. But most of all, be good to your D students - one of them will come back and build you a library!
A friend of mine sent me this earlier today... thought it might be of interest to some. (The picture of Winston wouldn't load). Sir Winston Churchill - wrote this in 1899 and died last month in 1965 Sir Winston Churchill 1899 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/mhtml:{2346306E-C249-4D0E-9384-0B6F49E15B1B}mid://00000018/!x-usc:cid:3BFBBEB37861465E8C10FC3756444AAC@YOUR152169FCE2 This is amazing. And even more amazing is that this hasn't been published long before now. CHURCHILL ON ISLAM Unbelievable, but the speech below was written in 1899! (check Wikipedia - The River War) I am sending the attached short speech from Winston Churchill, delivered by him in 1899 when he was a young soldier and journalist. It probably sets out the current views of many but expressed in the wonderful Churchillian turn of phrase and use of the English language, of which he was a past master. Sir Winston Churchill was, without doubt, one of the greatest men of the late 19th and 20th centuries. He was a brave young soldier, a brilliant journalist, an extraordinary politician and statesman, a great war leader and Prime Minister, to whom the Western world must be forever in his debt. He was a prophet in his own time; He died on 24 January 1965, at the grand old age of 90 and, after a lifetime of service to his country, was accorded a State funeral. HERE IS THE SPEECH: "How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome." Sir Winston Churchill; (Source: The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 London )
I don't have a Churchill quote however I admire him for many things he said and did in his life, most of all he apparently only had one close protection type bodyguard in a time when hitler had a Regt of them.
One quote from Churchill I recently read goes as follows; "You can always rely on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have tried everything else".
When addressing congress in the USA - Had my father been American and my mother British instead of the other way around, I might have found myself here anyway.
I know some nice quotes, but I'm sure they're allready posted here. Churchill was a very smart man, I recentley saw the film ''The Gathering Storm'' (2002). It was a very nice film about Churchill's career, not all of it offcourse, mainly about his time as a politcian before and at the outbrake of World War 2. I recommend this movie to everyone who wants to know more about Winston Churchill!
This one was posted earlier in the thread, but that was 4 to 5 years ago, so I will post my favourite again. On Clement Attlee: "A modest man, with a lot to be modest about." Best, Steve.
When addressing the American house - he said ' had my father been an American and my mother British instead of the other way around - I might have found my own way here!'
On Clement Attlee: "A modest man, with a lot to be modest about." Actually, IIRC Churchill vehemently denied having said this, for it would have been out of character. The relationship between Attlee and himself was one of long mutual respect, their political differences notwithstanding. Attlee was a decorated veteran of the Great War, and his mild demeanour masked a skilful and even sometimes ruthless political savvy - personally modest he might have been, but he was not modest in talent, as Churchill knew perfectly well. Best, Alan
'I like pigs, a dog will look up to you and a cat will look down upon you, a pig will look you straight in the eye and treat you as an equal' W.S.Churchill
From Hawkeye90 George Bush does not have the ability, nor the intelligence to to think of a quote himself. I think you Misunderestimate him Jim
You're drunk Winston was that not Bessie Braddock? Seeing the link with George Bush and speeches - Don Rumsfeld briefing George , Sir thre Brazilian soldiers were killed, George; Oh my god, oh my god! George wails head in hands, remind me again Don how many is three Brazillion?
