FOXNews.com - Report: 1 in 4 Britons Think Winston Churchill Never Existed - International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News 25%-that is a large number. I wonder how many of these can find countries on a map?
Call me an optimistic, call me young and innocent, but there must be some mistake. Out of all of those, not believing in Churchill is the weirdest. Weirder than not knowing who he was, certainly. But it's like not an American thinking FDR was "made up". Leaders of countries? Leaders of countries who were leading them while your grandparents were alive? So...confused...
Stanger things have happened. I remember reading a report one time that stated a large percentage of the US black population was under the assumption that Martin Luther King, Jr freed the slaves in the US. Pretty good for someone born 60+ years after the fact.

I remember reading a report one time that stated a large percentage of the US black population was under the assumption that Martin Luther King, Jr freed the slaves in the US. Pretty good for someone born 60+ years after the fact. What! The boy from Connecticut with 20 kids had nothing to do with it. I better get a new history book:p
This is yet another example of historical figures becoming as much of a myth as reality.....the very fact that the most influential politician of the 20th century can be reduced to a myth while some of the principle paticipants are still alive merely highlights the crying need for action NOW with the co-operation of the veterans and participants. Similar things have happened to other well known historical figures....Julius Caesar, Alexander of Macedon, Alexanders father Phillip II, Bonaparte, Adolf Hitler......it's a sign of the indifference of people to their own past. I will say, that this does achieve one thing, and that is to elavate these figures to the status of historical GODS, something most of these people probably had daylight fantasies about in their own lifetimes. World War 2 is and remains the best documented conflict on record, and we still cannot agree about the essential facts, or even that some of these people existed at all.... The distinguished science fiction authour, Frank Herbert, featured this occurance with his principle characters for his DUNE series of novels.....Paul Atriedes and his Son Leto,The God Emperor were so well known in their own day as to be known without mention.....but as time gave distance to the events that surrounded them, their exploits became more like fantastic tales that were used to prove their very NON-existence, with Herberts 'historians' tending to a ridiculous amount of conjecture to explain their significance. The God Emperor, benevolent tyrant that he was, even managed to execute 9 contemporary historians by fire on piles of their own works.....Herbert was making a powerful stement as to the nature of historical mythmaking in the process, because the God Emperor was over 3000 standard years old and could remember more history in a direct sence than any historian of his day.... And here it is, happening in our own lifetime, whilst many people that have met and talked to Winston Spencer Churchill still draw breath.... Shame of our ill-educated, selfcentered and materialistic youth.......shame!
And here it is, happening in our own lifetime, whilst many people that have met and talked to Winston Spencer Churchill still draw breath.... Shame of our ill-educated, self centred and materialistic youth.......shame! Christos settle down or you will burst a blood vessel! Don't be too harsh on the youth of today. I did British History at college in the 60's which dealt with historical conflicts and more importantly I was interested in WW2 so I knew a little of the players. History through the 80's & 90's in Australia was not directed at ww2 due mainly to the unpopular war in Vietnam. The only time my daughters discussed ww2 was doing a book on the holocaust for English, otherwise it was virtually non existent in classrooms. Also, without being sexist, 95% of females would not be interested and a great percentage of boys also. What my daughters know about WW2 comes from me with the exception of the resurgence of interest in WW1, the remaining veterans of Gallipoli (none now) and Anzac day. If it is not on the curriculum, they do not have a chance!
Sod it ! Does this mean that I never went to this Regimental Dinner and met Churchil1 ? Now they have shattered my dreams and I will never forgive them ! Ron Original story on the BBC People's War site: BBC - WW2 People's War - Churchill and Ron enjoy a meal together
It wasn't just our generation that got their history mixed up. In that history of 4 SLI I just read the CO is at Waterloo, in front of the Lion Monument and says to his driver, " Do you know what this memorial is for?" "Yessir, its where Nelson beat Napoleon."

Maybe he was coloured blind. At least Napoleon was part of the reason. Driver 1/2, CO zip!

Seriously though, ask most of my age group, "Who/what is the Duke of Wellington and they would acquaint it with the local pub of the same name.
May I be serious for just one moment ? Every time I read an article written by a revisionist, Every time I read an article written by a Holocaust Denier, Every time I read an article written by someone who hasn't studied the origins and effects of WW2 but rushes to condemn the actions of those who had to deal it....... I cringe. Am I the only one who seriously wonders who will be left to monitor and rebuke these characters for their inane utterings after we have shuffled off this mortal coil ? Your comments please ?
Do we actually exist??? First it's no Churchill, now we're plunging down a Descartian whirlpool! Got to wonder (as ever) at the sample this survey was taken from... 3000 under 20's apparently: Winston Churchill didn't really exist, say teens - Telegraph Which is a bit of a relief as it's a substantial stretch to extrapolate the results onto the entire populace. UKTV page here: UKTV Gold: Drama & Sci-fi: Is Robin real? (publicity succesfully generated, coincidence? ) Cheers, Adam.

The revisionists will not cease, neither will the deniers however history has been written and will be discussed and debated and protected by those generations who will follow.
From the Telegraph article. More than three-quarters of those polled (77 per cent) admitted they did not read history books, and 61 per cent said that they changed channels rather than watch historical programmes on television. Which I can easy believe as some of the 20-somethings at work poke fun at my reading matter at break time. Another example of modern life is some of them text their partners to solve a problem at home rather than phone them. For instance a mate of mine's girlfriend lost her debit-card, rather than call her to say get in touch with the bank & cancel it all dicussion on the lost debit-card between them was by text message. Do they know how to tak to each-other?
