May I take the liberty to mention that the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square is going to be lit later today.

The tree was, as always, cut in the forests north of Oslo in November and shipped to London.

It is a gift from the Norwegian population to the British as a symbol of our gratitude for help and support during the war.

This year's tree is number 64, if I'm not mistaken.

The Norwegians also send a tree to Newcastle each year and have done since the end of WWII - I believe it stands in the Central Railway Station - Thank you Norway!

Newcastle & Bergen are twin towns.

    From Bergen with love!

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor David Wood, invited the Mayor of Bergen, Gunnar Bakke to switch on the Civic Centre Christmas tree

One more Sunderlands tree also comes from Norway,Stavanger.
    News: South Sunderland (South Sunderland)

the tree in Trafalgar Square is presented to London by the Norwegian capital of Oslo - the only other cities in the UK to receive similar gifts are Sunderland and Newcastle, from Stavanger and Bergen respectively

Went on holiday to Croatia some years ago and got to know a Norwegian couple as you do - he told me they send a Christmas tree to London each year to say thank you. He also added they send one to Berlin with a message "Dont come back!"

    Cheers SB,

I wonder if the students will ruin the tree like they have done with the rest of Trafalgar Square-The latest being 'Revolution' being sprayed on Nelson's Column.

According to the Oslo paper Aftenposten, Oslo sends Christmas trees to London, Antwerpen, Rotterdam, Reykjavik and Washington.

Okay so they're protesting over education cuts and tuition fee hikes, so why target a Christmas tree? Perhaps they realised they've been naughty boys and girls so Santa's not going to visit them this year? Adam your absolutely right - pointless and disgusting.

The tree was donated in 1947 as a "Thankyou !" token from Norway.

When my kids were old enough to understand the meaning behind such a gift, my wife & I took them to Trafalgar Square to see the tree lit up in all it's glory.

Why does it come as no surprise to me today to learn that it was one of the targets in a student's demo ?

    The Cenotaph ?

    Churchill's statue ?

    Norway's tree ?

Anything that demonstrates the ethos of respect ?

Dear G-d, give me strength !

    Ron,

You hit the nail on the head with your points.

Quote. Anything that demonstrates the ethos of respect ?

Respect is sadly lacking with many in our communities.
