    Britain had a standing order for several hundred helicopters from the US to be used by AOP Squadrons for Overlord (delivery was anticipated in early 1944). For months it was chased up by the War Office but it seems the Americans dragged their heels on development and they never materialised.

    That's quite the thing, really.
    Must be hundreds, maybe thousands, of military types that now owe their lives to some maniac prepared to fly in and get them to treatment.

    Lashenden air warfare museum in Headcorn, Kent has one of these:

    Focke Achgelis Fa 330A-1 Gyro Kite W/nr 100549

    It looks like a bunch of scaffolding poles and a bike seat, but is under restoration apparently!
