Hi, My great Uncle was killed at sea near Crete or so I was always told.My gran never knew much about what happened to Charlie and neither did his wife. I've managed to get his service records and casualty card and found his wife never received his medals so was able to get them for my Gran which she was very happy about but I could never find out what boat he was on or much about his service int he war. Could someone kindly give me some more information from his records, as at least for me it doesn't tell me that much. Also is it possible to determine which ship he was on ? I've posted all the information I've got on Charlie below. Thanks Ian
Hello Ian and welcome I am sure forum members will be along shortly to assist with your query. there are members on here who can copy war diaries at Kew for a reasonable price regards Clive
from forum member Red Poppy Hi all, My understanding of the incident described is that about half of the 106th were evacuated from Greece on the Slamat. The others were left on the mainland to fight the rearguard action. As already mentioned, the Slamat was sunk, some survivors were picked up, whilst under heavy fire, by the Wryneck/Diamond which were then also sunk. In total around 250-300 men of the 106th were killed and only 4 of the men survived. The incident is described in the book 'Forty Men - Eight Horses' by Douglas Arthur, who was one of 106th who left the mainland on the Calcutta. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Forty-Eight-Horses-Douglas-Arthur-ebook/dp/B00ILQNBVA 106 (The Lanc Hussars) Lt AA Regt RA - April 1941
