I have come across an account of a one-armed naval beachmaster with a bulldog on Jig Red on D-Day about H+120. Has anybody else seen an account of this gentleman, or is it an unwitting extrapolation on Colin Maud on Juno after bingeing on "The longest Day"?

Clip of The Longest Day featuring Kenneth More as Colin Maud

    The Longest Day

In the 1962 movie The Longest Day he was played by Kenneth More.[20] Winnie, his dog, was a German Shepherd, and Werner Pluskat already had a dog of the same breed in the film, but Darryl F. Zanuck "improved upon history" by making Winnie an English Bulldog.[21] Maud acted as a technical adviser on the film and provided More with the same shillelagh he had carried on D-Day.

Colin Maud was on Juno with the Canadians. This was Jig Red. I was hoping somebody else might have seen similar reports. Ian

  6. It's a shame that when looking for a photo of Capt Maud on the web, only shots of Kenneth More appear, often without saying so.

Acting Captain Colin Douglas MAUD, D.SO., D.S.C, R.N. (seniority 31.12.42 (as Lieut-Cdr.) was not just a "principal beachmaster", he was the Naval Officer-in-Charge (N.O.I.C.) for JUNO Area, in charge of all Naval and Royal Marine personnel working in No. 102 Beach Sub Area, and the head of all JUNO Principal Beachmasters and of Ferry Craft.

Fortunately for us, he was filmed by Sgt Palmer while attending a football match held during the Bastille Day celebrations in Courseulles on 14 July 1944:

  7. Colin Maud lost his leg post war. Although it apparently happened after the shooting of "The Longest Day", this might explain the mixed-up, retroactive reminiscences of a one-armed "beachmaster":
I think I read somewhere of a no-nonsense black bearded beachmaster imperially directing traffic off the beach with a monkey on his shoulder, but that might be another case of "creative memory"
