Thank you for this Hugh it really brings home just how brave the men where. Knowing my dad was one of them makes me proud. So sad the young man died so quickly. The cold must have been horrendous.

Everyone on this forum have been a great help and given me an insight into what my dad and all the men suffered on the convoys.

Thank you. It was a tragedy and they were lucky to escape. I bought the video about it on Amazon prime. It was very sad watching it.

Hi I have been looking at my dads paperwork again can anyone explain the second line of the attached photo. The date is 20/10/45 I wondered if it was is regards to him leaving the navy.

Passed Proficiency Test. I can't remember exactly what the test was but it was something like swim 50 yards in overalls, tread water and remove overalls, tie knots in overall legs, fill overalls with air and use as buoyancy aid. Not exactly practical at sea.

Would you know anything about the war gratuity? My dads was issued 12 Dec 1945. He joined 31 October 1934.
