  3. Thank you for this Hugh it really brings home just how brave the men where. Knowing my dad was one of them makes me proud. So sad the young man died so quickly. The cold must have been horrendous.

    Everyone on this forum have been a great help and given me an insight into what my dad and all the men suffered on the convoys.

    in case you hadn’t got round to watching it yet, PBS America (Freeview 91) are showing it today at 3.35pm and again at 8pm.

  12. Hi I have been looking at my dads paperwork again can anyone explain the second line of the attached photo. The date is 20/10/45 I wondered if it was is regards to him leaving the navy.

    Not really sure but I think it may be a Form showing his medal entitlement.

    Passed Proficiency Test. I can't remember exactly what the test was but it was something like swim 50 yards in overalls, tread water and remove overalls, tie knots in overall legs, fill overalls with air and use as buoyancy aid. Not exactly practical at sea.

  17. Would you know anything about the war gratuity? My dads was issued 12 Dec 1945. He joined 31 October 1934.
