Following on from a conversation with Andy, I've added a Cemetery name input on the WW2 search engine. You can either select a cemetery as before, or enter a cemetery name. The name must match that used by CWGC exactly, or you may get results for a similar name rather than what you want. If you select a cemetery name then the Enter cemetery name input must be blank, else it will be used instead. You don't need upper case, either case will do. If you copy/paste from a CWGC record make sure there are no stray spaces in the copy, else it may not work. Results for one cemetery only are presented. If you want one of these, you must enter the full name exactly. If you enter just LLANFAIR, you will get just one, which could be any of these: LLANFAIR CAEREINION CEMETERY LLANFAIR CHAPEL (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD LLANFAIR CLYDOGAU (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD LLANFAIR DYFFRYN CLWYD (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD LLANFAIR KILGEDDIN (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD LLANFAIR NANT-Y-GOF (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD The search engine selector has about 1000 selections, those with 40 or more names, the search index has data for about 15,000 WW2 cemetery/memorials. A bit more explanation: The cemetery search word(s) need only be unique to the required cemetery. For example if I enter KILGEDDIN as the cemetery name, it will find burials for LLANFAIR KILGEDDIN (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD which is the only place this word occurs. If the search word occurs more than once (such as LLANFAIR) it will only find the first instance of this in my index (which has no particular order). I'll try and add some 'idiot proofing' at some point. Best option is however to enter the exact name as used by CWGC. There are 15,209 cemeteries in my index for WW2.
It works fine. If I enter "Arnhem" i get the Arnhem Moscowa cemetery. If i enter ""Arnhem Oosterbeek" i get the Arnhem Oosterbeek war Cemetery. Strange thing is, if I use the "select cemetery" list i don't see Arnhem Moscowa on that list?? Or am i just blind Ron

From my first post: The search engine selector has about 1000 selections, those with 40 or more names, the search index has data for about 15,000 WW2 cemetery/memorials. Moscowa has 30 casualties, so does not appear in my selector list as it is less than 40. If I added all 15,000 in my index to the list it would be very hard to find and pick the one you want. And I've now found a reasonable way of allowing all 15,000 to be selected. cheers, geoff

A You need to enter: KARACHI WAR CEMETERY otherwise you will get the first occurrence of the word 'KARACHI' in my (unordered) index, which is presumably UK names on the DELHI/KARACHI 1939-1945 WAR MEMORIAL. If the memorial name is in the the drop down list then use that, otherwise you have to enter the name manually, with caution - it's a search engine and only returns the first item it found. I may be able to expand this later. Using the full official CWGC name may be needed in some cases. cheers, geoff
Geoff, that's fascinating. It lets me search Belgium by province and I've found several early May 1940 casualties which are in front of the established positions. Another avenue of research opens up !
