    Thanks for the photos.

Re: Field grave location. If you type into Google Earth the numbers, spaces and letters of the latitude & longitude (no symbols required) as given earlier, the site is pinpointed. Much easier, and one can get a good view of the landscape in earth view.

Also, your father had no W in his name, but your grandfather's photo is titled was Capt Rowly S. How should I refer to him?
    Regards

    Peter

    Hi, Owen,
Yes, there is always another way!
But I don't understand the basis of this process. Please explain

Easy, you suggested reps2 manually type in the numbers, far easier to just copy & paste the co-ords into Google Maps.
Then save the Google Maps url once the location is shown.
No need for any typing at all.

I'm fairly sure my father was Rowland, known as Rollo - LG will have his full name, but I'm trying to swich off preparatory to driving 530 miles tomorrow!

Grandfather, presumably ditto, but my grand mother sacked him long before the war. My mother was not allowed to meet him!

I'm sorry to say that the Old Stoic Register is less full than I hoped!

    SPENCER, RHM (Richard)
    Walpole 35/3 to 38/3
    b. 01/05/21
    killed in action 04/12/40
Ent Schol Mon King's Camb Schol
    (Hist) War: LAC RAFVR
    Brother of SPENCER, PR 1936,

and for completeness, my father's entry:

    SPENCER, PR (Rollo)
    Grafton 31/3 to 36/2
    b. 20/12/17
    killed in action 08/08/44
    Ent Schol. Pref(H) H of S Sixth
    U-O XV 34 35 (Capt) XI 35 36
    Clare, Camb Schol (Mod Lang)
War: Capt Argyll & Sutherland H

There seems to be a good bit of doubt as to whether he was killed on the 7th 8th or 9th August, but no doubt about the fact.

Hope I've picked the correct search terms here, RA units out of my comfort zone.

Apart from the one in bold which covers Aug 1944, I've no idea which others of these would be relevant to Captain PR Spencer's service history.

    Hallo reps2
Forgive my barging in as an outsider and not at home with this terse military language, but I think we are distant cousins. Your ancestry, unless I am astray, is: son of Rollo Spencer (1917-44), son Molly Thompson (born 1896/7), daughter of Antoinette Keene (1872-1940), daughter of Theophilus Keene (1817-87), son of John Keene (1754-1841), who was my great-great-great-grandfather.
I am interested in reading the Charles Austin Sherman account which you mention, but could only find the book up to p.43. Perhaps I got into it the wrong way. Googling by "Spencer of Ferring" did not produce the book. Can you give me more precise details? I shall be grateful for your help.

Sire, since he's my father, I'm confident that what you say about him largely applies to me too! I've tried to contact you on RootsChat - would you care to continue the discussion there? Kind regards, Charles
