    Hi,
I am trying to find out the area and circumstances that this RA office was captured, the info I have at the moment it:

    Captain David Frederic Dobell Adamson
    Army number 94091
    Born 4 June 1919
    Died march 2003
    Commissioned 2/Lt RA 2nd Sept 1939
Later POW number 1615, Oflag 79 Brunswick.

Entitled to a 1939/45 and France& Germany stars, Defence and war medals.

From this entitlement it is possible that he served in France or Norway during 1940 and was evacuated, remained in the UK and arrived back in France after 6th June 1944 then subsequently captured...

I am interested in confirming his unit and date/place of capture...any extra information or help appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

    Dear Rick,

If you try the national archives Kew and look in the WO 344 files which are brief written records by POWs after being liberated, for the use of MI9.

Adamson may not be in the file for some reason or other but it is worth a try as it will give the date he was captured, possibly where and definitely have what unit he was with. There might be other information but usually I find that there is very little extra information that some POWs give.

You could try this file which may have a file relating to him

    WO 344/2/2 ADAMS S - ADYE GR

If you can't go to kew you can get a digital copy.

    Hope this is of help.

    Brithm

Sorry there does not seem to be any Liberation Report made by the man in the File. Looked at everyone with the surname incase it had been put in out of Alpha sequence.

Either he didn't make one or it was of interest to another department who took the original and didn't make a copy.
Reports for five members of various Commonwealth Armies were looked for yeasterday. Ony one was in the Files.

Hi, I have since confirmed that Lt DFD Adamson was with 124 Fd Regt RA (TA) March to June 1942 in North Africa, it is possible that his medals got mixed up and he is entitled to an Africa star. 124 Regt RA have no war diary for July/Aug 1942 due to intense action and heavy losses, I suspect it was about this time that he was taken POW?
    Cheers,
    Rick

    Hi Rick,

I did a check on the NA Database for 124 Field Regt and WD Ref WO169/4605 covers Jan to April and July to December 1942.

You might be able to find out more after all. Hope that helps.

    Regards - Rob

    Hello Rick,

The 124th Field Regiment, RA, was the duplicate of the 72nd Field Regiment, RA. At the outset of WWII it was in the 23rd (Northumbrian) Division, the 50th (Northumbrian) Division's duplicate. It was a second line outfit until circa July 1940 when it transferred into the 50 Div with the 69th Infantry Brigade - 5th Bn East Yorkshire Regt, and 6th and 7th Bns Green Howards. It stayed with 50 Div until the latter was sent home as a training cadre in December 1944.

Although the 69th Infantry Brigade served as a labour division with the BEF and had a rough time, no divisional troops - including the 124th Field Regt, RA - were sent overseas. So, if Lt Adamson has a France Star he must have earned it with a different outfit before transferring into the 124th Field Regt, RA.

    Thanks again Guys,
It looks as though his medals may have been mixed up with another family member as it is looking more like he was taken POW in North Africa in June/July 1942.
    Cheers,
