190967 War Substantive Lieutenant, Temporary Captain Alfred John DAYMOND, 582 SL Bty RA (Moonlight)

Capt. DAYMOND commanded a SL Tp (Moonlight) which was continually in action from 23 March to May 1945 on the 30 CORPS front in HOLLAND and GERMANY.

Despite the fact that half the personnel were untrained in the moonlight role and inexperienced in battle, the troop answered every call of its most important task and made light of arduous conditions and persistent enemy shelling and air attack.

The credit for the splendid work of the troop is due to Capt. DAYMOND for his unrelenting energy, enterprise and disregard of danger. On one occasion when one of his sections was engaged over open sights by a SP gun and small arms, which caused serious casualties to personnel and equipment, it was largely due to his coolness and example that the equipment was repaired and the section ready for action the night following the action.

Captain DAYMOND's unceasing devotion to duty and easy assumption of heavy responsibility was an important factor in the success of the operations carried out by 30 CORPS.

Captain Alfred John Daymond was my uncle and was awarded the Military Cross for his efforts ...perhaps this (above) is the citation for that award...

He never spoke much to me, being a female I suppose, about those times but I do know, from his brother, that it affected him deeply that some of 'his men' were lost...sadly he died several years ago.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your memories of your uncle.

I've moved your post to its own thread.
Do you have a photo of him you'd care to post here?

I'll try and find his recommendation and post it here as well.

    Regards,
    Diane
