Any info on this man please : PHILIP ALEXANDER Rank: Captain Service No: 100210 Date of Death: 03/04/1942 Age: 43 Regiment/Service: Royal Artillery 3 H.A.A. Regt. Grave Reference: P.B.9. Cemetery: PERTH WAR CEMETERY AND ANNEX Additional Information: Son of William and Jessie McDonald Philip, of Aberdeen, Scotland; husband of Gwendeline Philip, of Newark, Nottinghamshire. England.
His death was announced in the Aberdeen Press and Journal newspaper 20 April 42. I don't have a subscription to look at it though.
Parents Jessie Ann McDonald (born est 1871, died 1947, age 76) & William (born est. 1866, died either 1945 (age 77) or 1952, (age 86)) married in St. Nicholas district of Aberdeen in 1892. At 40 Belgrave Terrace on the 1901 Census with sons William (died Aberdeen 1983 age 87), Alexander and Douglas M. D. Philip (died 1971 Aberdeen, age 70). There might be family trees on Ancestry from what I can see. Member Tricky Dicky might be able to have a look.
Thanks again , I know his grandad Jimmy Philip (18??-1930) was the very first manager of Aberdeen football club. He was in charge of the club from its foundation in 1903 until his retirement in 1924. He died in a car crash in Belfast in 1930. I take it the Royal Artillery 3 H.A.A. Regt. were stationed in the Far East and Alexander had managed to escape the Japanese advance.
I know a major donor to the football club, do you want me to drop them an email? This could be his marriage in 1928 to Gwendoline in England. I found no marriage entry in the Scottish records.
Well done amberdog45. Place of death is in hospital, Western Australia so he must have been evacuated from Singapore where 3HAA were. Tim
He has an entry from '42 in the Army Casualty List over at Find My Past. Can get 14 days free subscription but ensure you untick the automatic renewal box if you don't wish to subscribe after the free trial is up.
Thanks very much for that info. I've used the 'free' Find My Past before. Didn't know they had casualty lists. For ages I've been trying to find out about an officer who is marked on the Rgt Roll in Changi as 'admitted Queen Alexandra Hospital on disembarkation. May have been evacuated on hospital ship'. I'll be onto it tomorrow. Tim
Thanks Guy for the posts. Tim, it's sometimes worth keeping an eye on Rootschat. They are always alerting folks when there are free weekends at Find My Past or Ancestry. Ancestry has some records free this current weekend. Cheers - Maria
