I passed this place today whilst driving through Snowdonia. Crikey it looked like a small concentration camp with high fences topped with barbed wire! Anyone know anything about it?
Army (and probably Defence) Mountain Training Centre - mainly for Adventure Training rather than Mountain Warfare. Been there for many years. Like most military bases it was given added protection towards the end of the last century because there were those around that saw such small isolated camps as a soft target. Cosy little place actually! Chris
When I was in the Army Cadets (way back in the late 60's) in Birkenhead (Earl of Chesters' Yeomanry) we would go adventure training, as they called it then, and we'd spend wonderful, bracing, character building training weekends in North Wales, around Capel Curig, Nebo and climbing on the Idwal Slabs. Great place to develop your resistance to cold, wet, windy conditions, and that's the summer!
Back in 83 we used this camp for military adventure training. We climbed the mountain near by and made snow shelters on top. We did white water canoeing and used it has a base for venturing to the Slate mines and for potholing. I have fond memories of Capel Curig. Is the pub still there with the water coming down the back of it into a pool. Spent a few good nights in there.
