I got the following message on my Artillery site, is it true that they don't give out any service records, or was he on the wrong address?

Thank you for this site, it honors our soldiers much more than our country has. My father was Royal Canadian Artillery Lance Bombadier John Herbert Howett - SN K-74121. He landed on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944 and fought in France, Holland, Begium and Germany. My government will not supply me with what Battery and Regiment he served with. He was with either the 12th-13th-14th or 19th Field Regiments although I have found some information that points to it having been the 12th Field Regiment. Do you have any access amoungst your files as to the individual soldiers assigned to the Regiments you have files on. I believe that just after the war ended his unit was withdrawn from Germany to Nimajen. Thank you for any help your can provide me and for the excellent work you are doing for our veterans.

If he has the service number he should be able to get all this information at the national archive. some may be blacked out if the veteran has only recently died.

When I requested information on my father's service file some years back I was told it would not be released unless the person has been dead at least 25 years. Has this changed?

I have my dad's here any personal info is blacked out for 25 years details of wounds ect. I believe you have to prove your relationship as well to get the info. BTW I see that you have added the BW bagde.

Philip, what is not stated is whether his father is deceased. I am assuming he is.

The Access to Information and Privacy Act are the two laws which the Library and Archives Canada operate by when it comes to personnel records. From LAC's website:What to Search: Topics - Genealogy and Family History - Library and Archives Canada

If the individual has been deceased for less than 20 years, limited information may be released to immediate family. Proof of death and relationship must be provided.

There are no restrictions on access to information relating to an individual who has been deceased for more than 20 years. Proof of death is required.

Proof of Death: A copy of a death certificate, newspaper obituary, funeral notice or photograph of the gravestone. Note that proof of death is not required if the individual died while in service.

Proof of Relationship: A document that clearly demonstrates the relationship between the individual concerned and the person requesting the record. Both names must appear on the document. A newspaper obituary, baptismal certificate or full-form birth certificate are acceptable. A wallet-sized birth certificate that does not indicate parents' names is not accepted. Please do not send original documents; photocopies are acceptable.

Immediate Family: A parent, spouse, child, sibling or grandchild of the individual.

    Hoping this helps.

    Dave

Regt should be no problem, but Bty might not be recorded in the standard personnel file.
