Rich Payne I've just realised I missed your entry about the RC meaning Reinforced Concrete - how DID I manage that? Apologies and thanks for the knowledge, as I said I didn't have a clue and this is completely out of my field (Computer Network Engineer).
Well I think that clears up the Diary entry nicely:
"Pedaso 7th July 1944. Chief Engineer Brings sad news that Driver Parker and Sapper Jones – 2 Platoon killed. Apparently set off Booby Trap when collecting Tellermines for blasting Reinforced Concrete Bridges."

I've also since found the following extract in a later entry of the Situation Reports:

    (D) Vehicle Casualties: 15-cwt Ford GS 4 x 2 War Department Number Z.4962875 involved in accident from explosives in PESCARA. Bodywork badly damaged but being repaired by Unit.

    (H) Casualties: 1945592 Driver Parker, R.G. and 4865427 Sapper Jones, C. killed in action by enemy mine on 7.7.44 at Map Reference Italy, Sheet 141 1/100,000 C.1729 (Via Della Riviera, PESCARA). Buried at TORINO DI SANGRO Military Cemetery on 8.7.44. Map Reference Italy Sheet 148 (IV) 1/50,000 443018. Grave Numbers: Parker – 14B.33. Jones – 14B.32.

Thank you all very very much! You've helped me discover how my Granddad died, where he was and what he was doing. Until now I've know only that he was "killed during the war". It's been a long and difficult journey, and one I never could have made without all your help.
    Very Best Regards,
    Andrew Kendall.

No worries, Andrew. It's easy to miss things when these threads get busy. I'm glad that you've been able to fill in some detail. In some ways, the information is so accessible today and many families were never properly informed at the time.

It might be reasonable to assume that they took that 15cwt truck to pick the explosives up. If you're wondering what it looked like, try Googling "Fordson WOT2" - I'd expect it to have been one of those, probably a WOT2E. (Fordson was the name used on Ford commercials in the UK at that time).

    Cheers, Rich.
