    Hi Paul,

I would like to thank you once again for posting the photographs from around the Wrightington area, which have encouraged me to write the story of Pte. Stanley Roden of 142 Commando who took part in, but sadly died during Operation Longcloth in 1943.

The fact that Stanley is remembered in so many places in the local area, is testament to both his family and the people he lived amongst.

If you would like to read this short story then please follow the link and scroll down alphabetically:

    Best wishes.

Stone cross on Green Street. Commemorates both wars (and subsequent conflicts) but it looks like all the names are for WW1 casualties.

Poplar Fire Station Blitz Memorials to AFS Firemen
Two memorials: one inside the fire station entrance and one outside above the entrance. The external plaque was erected by Firemen Remembered an independent charity dedicated to honouring firemen and firewoman who died in WW2. The internal framed memorial containing a description of the events of 10th September 1940 and two photographs of the bomb devastation is by Poplar Fire Station. I am researching AFS Fireman John Whittaker Dilworth who lived at Hindle House Arcola Street Hackney E8 and would appreciate any information on him. Thanks to Poplar Fire Station London E14 for providing the information and allowing me to view the internal memorial.
