Can service numbers help tell the where and when of a soldier? TW Jones, KOYLI

Discussion in 'War Cemeteries & War Memorial Research' started by Christopher Berry, Apr 17, 2025.

  1. I have a soldier's name engraved on Hayle War memorial - TW Jones KOYLI.
I have found 3 Jones names in the KOYLI using CWGC but they all have very different numbers. Private T W Jones 2/4Bn from Lanarkshire is 2195564, Private W Jones 2/4Bn from Liverpool is 961502 and TW Jones 9th Bn from Tipton is 4927709.
Can understanding these numbers help me in my search for the right man? At the moment all 3 appear to have no connection with Hayle and Cornwall at all!!

  3. Owen, Thanks very much indeed ... I now know one was RE and another South Staffs but 961502 seems to be a bit of a mystery.
    Non-combat begins at 970000.
Does anyone have any idea about the numbers just before the 97s?

If they are post 1920 numbers they will tell you only which Regiment/Corps that soldier enlisted into . The number was retained throughout their army career including transfers to other unit or corps . It will not positively identify an area connection.

    The numbers you quoted

    4927709 :- South Staffordshire Regiment

    961502 :- Royal Artillery

    2195564 ;_ Royal Engineers

Once the UK Medal cards are back on Ancestry you may find an application with a home address on from a wife or parent?

You posted this question elsewhere 861311 Pte. Leslie OLIVER, 2nd Border Regiment: 03/04/1945

I haven't found your answer (bet you thought I'd forgotten!) but I have found something from the Cornwall FHS that suggests he is also remembered at Phillack, (I think that the reference to KOSB may be erroneous)
    https://www.cornwallfhs.com/cornwallswarhistory/world-war-2-search/

It provides a service number 2195564 which leads to the CWGC:
    https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2621003/thomas-william-jones/

No idea what the connection between Cornwall and Lanarkshire is, if indeed there is one, but it may provide another clue.
His medal card's address is redacted.

  9. Goodness me!
THANKS very much for confirming to me why I have a headache about the chap!
    I am TRULY gratefull.
I shall fill in the Jones spot with the 3 possibles I've found but give a full account of the Wilshaw Lad.
I've trawled the local census returns and 1939 register... found one possible Thomas Jones BUT he did not go to his maker until the 1990s!
    Sincerely,
    C
