  1. Snailer - Absolutely brilliant!

I'd guessed he was a George, but of course couldn't be sure until now.

Just have to track down where he came from. I know he had a connection with Bristol in 1941/42, so (unless he was posted to Filton, for example) maybe he came from that area?

    Thanks once again.

    Kind regards

Third one in from the right, 2nd row looks uncannily (to me) like Stanley aged 19, a relative maybe or even a son from another relationship?...he's about the right age and you did say Stanley was devious!

It should be relative easy to trace the Belgium airfield group used by the the RAF 2nd Tactical Air Force in September 1944.Much harder will be the task of identifying the airfield.

Airfields had prefix codes for security reasons and the Belgian airfields used by the RAF,lie between B 55 and B 76 with the exception of B 57 which is Lille,an existing French airfield still in use as a civilian airfield, south of Lille one the east side of the A1 autoroute. The Widipedia document is a very good reference but in wartime but an airfield location would be restricted on a need to know basis, its identity being referenced as a code.

So the best source of information would be the 2nd Tactical Air Force battle order as of September 1944.This may not be readily available but other snapshots may give some information bearing in mind that airfield possession for ground support operations was generally transient, reflecting the pace of liberation of occupied territory. Furthermore, the identity of the battle order airfields may be given as the Base Airfield for the particular Wing of the two 2nd Tactical Air Force Groups operating, namely No 83 and No 84 Groups.

I can list the RAF airfields occupied by the RAF during the 1944 operations in Belgium...later.

  4. I never fail to be amazed by the knowledge available via this forum and other like it!

Thanks - I would love to be able to narrow down the airfields.

    Kind regards
