Just picked up an identity card used by an Italian POW in England during WW2. Interesting in that it includes a photo of the soldier. I would post a scan, but don't seem to be able to post pics in this forum anymore. Anyway, according to the stamps, the soldier in question was at a camp at Byfield. Did a bit of work on the net looking for Byfield Camp and found a list of WW2 POW Camps, all countries, incomplete I think. However, it is a start. http://www.wartimememories.co.uk/pow/pow.html

Here are a couple: 1) There was a camp at Wenvoe Park, Cardiff, that held Italian POWs. 2) There was a camp at Dove Holes, Derbyshire. My partners father was a guard at this camp, which is how he met her mother. Britain must have been hard pressed for soldiers towards the end of WW2 as my partners father was shot through the chest, and ended up with one lung. They still didn't let him go home, but made him guard POWs! Anyone know how to find his records without paying the £25? The family feel so bad they wont pay, and won't authorise anyone else to pay. They say the army ruined their fathers life without paying £25 to find out exactly how.
Beppe, Thanks for the info. I've got a list for WW1 as well, which I posted in TGWDF, you may have seen it. The only trouble with the lists are that they record camps known to have existed-I can't find any info. as to an exact timescale. Think your idea about posting amendments is workable, but we need to be careful whether we're talking about permanent camps or places which were temporarily pressed into service. All suggestions welcomed. B)
