    have a look at this

"The SD2 was disarmed by making a clay wall around the weapon, and pouring liquid nitrogen, freezing the mercury spirit gauge that would activate the bomb once disturbed. Once loaded onto a vehicle, the bomb was safely disposed of."

Butterfly Bomb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Butterfly bombs could be fitted with any one of three fuses:
    • 41 fuse - triggered detonation on impact with the ground
    • 67 fuse - clockwork time delay adjustable between 5 and 30 minutes after impact
    • 70 fuse - anti-handling device (i.e. boobytrap), triggering detonation if the bomb was moved after impact with the ground
Note: butterfly bombs in a submunitions container could have the full range of fuses fitted to increase disruption to the target. Fuse variants such as the 41A, 41B, 70B1, 70B2, etc., also existed. These variants were inserted into the fuse pocket via a bayonet fitting but were otherwise identical.

    Indded Tom,

I believe the Russian were still using something similiar or even the same in Afghanistan in the 80's. The only difference was they painted them pretty colours so the local children would pick them up. If memory serves me well I think they used to throw them out of helicopters by the shed load.

This is a PFM-1 as used by the russians in afghanistan also refered to as the butterfly ,its a totally differnt shape and design to the German SD2 .Picture shows an inert instructional copy i have.
The PFM-1 anti-personnel mine/bomblet is a Soviet air delivered, plastic mine filled with liquid explosive, usually green, sand, or white coloured. Any distortion of the body causes the mine to explode, including light pressure while handling. It does not self-destruct and cannot be neutralized,
It is a back engineered copy of the USA Made BLU-43

Wheras The post ww2 American M83 also known as a butterfly is an american copy of the german SD2 ,
