I got some advice from a guy called 3dKiwi, on the vagaries of a program called Bodypaint. This guy is one of the best in the world at 3d. Bodypaint is used for just about all cg effects you see in movies, in fact you don't even notice most of them. Now this is very good, as it means the project has been noticed. I have to come up with the goods before I can get these people to jump onboard though.

I also got some advice on the float wires and the yagis. I just need to add alpha maps to single polygons. (An alpha map is a sort of stencil)

I put the yagis on, glad I did, as I think that's how the thing got the nickname the porcupine. Having the support wires on the floats also helps it along.

What number should I put on this thing Hebridean? Which one was your da on?

"O" orange - DP180, as far as I'm aware - "Gert" was the aircraft with the "frequent-flyer" award but I'm still going through some stuff that is conflicting info...

Not sure about your engine issue - remember that the Sunderland was only used during a "lull" in the preceedings for rescue purposes so how useful is this for your project...?

The engine thing is not hugely important, a second to rotate the blades if need be.

So, I need an image of DP (the roundal, sans red spot) 180

I also need an oblong decal for the tail, grey blue and light blue, is the number on there as well? All the pictures I've seen, it doesn't look like there is, or it's very small numbering.

This picture shows the body lines painted on. They will be toned down a lot with extra layers of paint. In fact you should only have the vaguest impression that they're there. i might have missed a little porthole up near the cockpit. I blame the drawing for that. I can't see past the engines on them.

This thread has been for a bit of a wander, it was put into the gaming section for a day.

Isn't that where it should be, though?

I've totally missed this thread, as my main interest in Burma
is regarding 2/Recce. However, if it had been in the games section
I would have noticed and followed it with the interest I now have
    for your ambitious project.

I also concur with Idler, that a Burma mod for Arma/ArmaII would
be great - and perhaps also simpler to achieve?

Anyway, I look forward to further updates and progress reports.

Any game which allows me to fight Japs in Jungle as a Brit is
    ALRIGHT BY ME!

Perhaps you could give a list of what you're undertaking?
Units you intend to model as well as equipment, aircraft,
    vehicles etc?

This might help - "O" and DP180 - remove the coloured section on the top - very scuffy weathered look...

Hi at Home Dad, I think the jungle one looks pretty impressive.

When the thread got moved, i looked through the posts but decided that that making a game calls for historical knowledge in the first instance. Though at some stage I'll need to post in the gaming section to see what people want.

Up to now, I've got the heads of a Brit, Gurkha, Sikh and Jap. I also want to create Americans and Chinese troops, I like the idea of the Chinese in American uniforms. As for kit, in the first instance, the lee enfield, bren and sten, mortars and grenades. I do already have a willy's jeep and a dodge ambulance and I'm sure I can find models of other vehicles. The only thing I think I'll have to make though is the grant tank.

Hi hebridean, that picture does the trick, so the darker grey upper but sun bleached almost to destruction.

Hi Hebridean, were you saying someplace here, that the O of this plane looks like a D. I wasn't sure of the font but put on a very square looking zero. Because of the curve of the plane it looks like a D.

When I wrote that list of heads, I realised that I'd forgotten the Indian national Army. So I tried to find a few pictures of their uniforms. I did find one that sounds great for a game :) A regiment of Lara Crofts, sounds like fun. i don't think I'll make one of those, as it would only appeal to psycho misogynistic geeks. The sort of people who shoot up schools. http://www.onesixthwarriors.com/forum/sixth-scale-action-figure-news-reviews-discussion/87593-jhansi-regiment-indian-national-army.html

The uniform looks right however, though I would have thought the colour of it is not that good for fighting in the jungle.

Bob, dont forget to add figures who represent
the local Naga tribe of headhunters!

Working on some stills so might find some uniform shots...

From a distance... it was just supposition... a nice clean "O" ... curves on every corner... the original name was "Cheesecake" then became "Gert"...

:D I could put Inuit squadies into the game. They'd sit at tiny little water holes, fishing, and of course they'd have to wear bush hats. Not much A.I. to them either, you'd just shoot them :)

I've got the letter "O" in the right place, and with a square shaped O font character. On the port side of the plane it can definitely look like a a letter D. on the starboard side it looks like an O.

Ah but, that image is taken from an angle where the "O" looks right.

Hunting through google, I found a model shop that does etchings for the cockpit and depth charge bay of the Sunderland. It's to fit the Airfix Sunderland model. The model only costs about £17 but the cockpit detail costs about £20. Costly to make your actual model then but I can just download the image of the etching. So a cut from the low poly model to an interior is possible in a game.

I did find a thread on a rc plane message board, where a guy says he has some spot on plans. I've sent him an e mail for them. A rebuild but probably worth the effort. In the meantime I get on with the Gurkha and Brit squadies.

A little update on the plane, the tail and fins still need maps, and the colour scheme is perhaps too dark on the upper surfaces. Actually there's not much in it, as in greyscale it looks near enough. Plus we have to allow for the camera having a colour filter on it.

Tell the truth, I'd love to make a game in grainy black and white footage style but I can't see gamers going for that. This is the "forgotten war," I don't want to bury it entirely.
