Robert I think you are right On first glance I thought It had a bouncing bomb in the back but now at closer look its a naval mine
Years ago I was offered a Heinkel bubble car. The top had been replaced with a square Bf 109 style cockpit cover, the nose painted yellow and the rest was in dunkelgrun - at least they hadn't painted a balkan cross on the side
I always thought the Messerschmitt had the cockpit style canopy (Messerschmitt KR200 - Wikipedia) and that the Heinkel had a front opening door (Heinkel Kabine - Wikipedia) But then I am no expert on these matters TD
Once a venue for the Who. The Railway Hotel,Wealdstone nw London Building flattened and now a block flats
Elstree Tunnel airshafts Borehamwood: Elstree Tunnels Airshafts (C) Nigel Cox Viewed from the A411 Barnet Lane these are two of the airshafts on the former Midland Railway's Elstree Tunnels. The airshafts are about 30 metres apart giving some idea of the separation between the two tunnel bores. The railway was originally opened in 1868 with just one tunnel bore and the nearer red brick airshaft is over that tunnel, so is presumably contemporary with it. Shortly after, and certainly by 1898 as it is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of the time, the second tunnel was built to cope with increased railway traffic, and the far darker brick airshaft is on the newer bore. Given that the ground level on the A411 here is about 119 metres above sea level and that it is about 92 metres in the vicinity of Elstree and Borehamwood Station one would guess that the tunnel track level is roughly about 25 metres down from the ground level at the airshafts.
Well done Guy I have driven past them for many years and not bothered to take a photo until now Regards Clive
I'm familiar with ventilation shafts on a number of tunnels but none with that sort of domed grill. The ones I know have simple flat grills to stop people falling down the shaft (or disposing of rubbish). Is there any reason other than the engineer's vanity for the more elaborate structure?
Not unique. For instance there are similar ones on the Totley tunnel near Sheffield and on the Netherton tunnel near Huddersfield. Tim
