I thought that war memorials were usually to those who fell, not to those who served in general ?

    Hello Rich
a bit more about it here

Paul Reid, Director of the Black Cultural Archives said:

The histories of World Wars often overlook the significant contributions made by African and Caribbean soldiers. However, today we can proudly mark the recognition of their bravery and sacrifice to the struggles of independence.

As the national heritage centre dedicated to the preservation of Black history, we will continue to tell the stories of their service and to ensure their contributions and the legacy of this historical narrative becomes part of a more inclusive British history, and remains accessible to all through our archive collection.

The memorial was devised by the Nubian Jak Community Trust (NJCT). The Trust runs a commemorative plaque and sculpture scheme to highlight the historic contributions of Black and minority ethnic people in Britain and has led the three year campaign to honour servicemen and women from the First and Second World Wars.

imagine the tonnage of shit hitting the fan if there were plans for a white british war memorial?
racism is not just one way.
memorials should be for ALL serving soldiers, not singling out different races.

But can you imagine the sort of people such a monument would attract? Besides which, I've been to hundreds of monuments, most of which commemorate units where only white people served, so I would argue they are already well represented.

I don't see any problem with a monument to a particular section of society that served in the wars. Similar to this:
Sheffield's wartime 'Women of Steel' statue unveiled - BBC News

I didn't see anyone complaining when this monument was unveiled. Nor should they complain, as it serves an important role in raising awareness of an often overlooked contribution made by a certain section of society to the war effort.

    Same with the Brixton memorial.
