Hello all, i'm trying to identify which British units or HQ's were based in the Hannover area over the period 1945-47.

Can anybody point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks,

    Mac.

Mike, i'm looking at the city itself i think. The record of the person i'm researching has them AWOL in Hannover . Unfortunately that's all i have. I do know they were Royal Engineers and worked in the Bergen - belsen area post war. I was trying to narrow down possibilities for further reasearch.

Do you mean AWOL = Absence Without Official Leave?

The closest to Hannover was Hameln, see above link.

I do remember however that British Officers were moving into houses in Kleefeld and Kirchrode (part of Hannover)sometimes between 1946 and 1948.

152nd brigade (51st HD) were in and around the Hanover area, 2 battalions of which (2nd Seaforth were billeted in Neustadt) 5th Seaforth and 5th Camerons were billeted in Herrenhausen, commencing 27th Feb '46. They were tasked with law and order duties. Their main problem being Black market, thieving and murderers. At Hanover Rail Station approx. 1000 German and displaced persons would shelter in the underground bunkers over night. A Cameron raid on the D.P's camp at Empelde, an old Dynamite factory, honeycombed with concrete bunkers, they caught 3 murderers. Late April 152 brig moved to Dempsey Barracks and from there to Brussels in May and suspended animation.
