They did that with the Patricia who previously held the record... Interesting to muse on that for a moment, Drew. Hell of a shot, I should say! cheers, phil
Especially considering the rifle only has a range of 1km if memory serves me well Phil. I used to mark out 1.5 miles runs for BPFA's when I was a PTI and that is 2.4 km. Does a 7.62 round have that range? Appears the calibre is higher and its not the L96 that I'm familiar with. Another point is I wasn't aware that the HAC had a sniper role as they are Armoured Recce and snipers are normally found in Platoons within a Infantry Battalion.
The man himself. Is he Guards Para Platoon member? Crack sniper's mile and a half Taliban killing is longest ever - mirror.co.uk Expect he'll be target now for some terrorist when he gets home.
Whilst it is certainly a propaganda coup and (well done that man), Owen is right. His cards will be marked now.
Household Cavalry is attached to 16 Air Assault which allows them to wear the red beret. The fact he has his wings up says he's done P Company and his Jumps course which is optional. I'm surprised they've ID him like this. Normally they blur snipers faces on the TV not only to protect him but his family in the UK which will now be easy to find if anyone wishes. Quite bizarre.
That not the 16 AA Bde flash though. 16 Air Assault Brigade - British Army Website it's 11 light bde 11 Light Brigade - British Army Website
Unless the Bde's Orbat has changed since I was in HAC was Armoured Recce for 16 AA hence all the airborne badges etc. His cap badge looks Household Cav although his rank isn't Coproral of the Horse - The chevrons should be upside down. I assume he couldn't get a proper rank slide. I wonder if he was attached for the tour and made to wear the Bde insignia, the same has happened to me on all my tours. Edit just noticed they are now 11 Bde on your link. I wonder who gives 16 AA their Armoured role now then. How cut backs change things
Yes it is. Corporal of Horse: Three chevrons, point down, with metal crown above You are thinking of next rank up. Like this. http://www.kellybadge.co.uk/images/K2Q216.jpg
Looks like a Staff Sergeant one to me. I thought they were either two or four chevrons too. Can't remember now.
Household Cavalry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Staff Corporal/Squadron Quartermaster Corporal = : Four chevrons, point up, with metal crown above, worn on lower sleeve Corporal of Horse Three chevrons, point down, with metal crown above Lance Corporal of Horse: Three chevrons with cloth crown above Lance Corporal: Two chevrons with metal crown above
OK guys you've got me curious. Never having been in the army these various ranks are lost on me, how do they compare to what most of us consider 'normal' ranks? Mallard
Another example of Regiments doing their own thing, to the confusion of us all! Household Cavalry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Effectively "deadeye dick" is a Sergeant in comparison to other units. An Armd Regt wouldn't normally have snipers as mentioned above. Given that numerous units are seemingly rotating through Afghanistan at present I imagine quite a few personnel are learning new trades.
There was a short item on Radio 4's Today program this morning. It mentioned a newspaper report of a sniper who had killed 5 (or was it 15) and could not be named for security reasons. Sorry missed the details and paper name, the traffic was unusually busy. It was shortly before 8am
lol ummm actually before you brits get all horny, a CANUCK has the OFFICIAL world record for the LONGEST kill EVER recorded.,, Corporal Rob Furlong, from the Princess Pats Light Inf, and I will get the official details.. So i dont have to listen to what his badges are speculation and his medals.... ad Nauseum...
