The spanish civil war took place between 1936 and 1939 which kept BMH Gibraltar busy, including 55 German naval casualties when the battleship Deutschland was bombed off the coast of Ibiza

Four QAs were flown out to the wreck by flying boat to care for the remaining casualties. This included Colonel Gertrude Morgan who was later awarded the German Red Cross medal on 21 November 1938, with a certificate from Adolf Hitler.

The german navy were so grateful for the QAIMNS nursing their injured comrades that a visiting sister battleship crew gave a dance party for the QAs. The German Admiral presented the QAs with their decorations.
