My family have loads of british television series and mini series on DVD, video or recorded of the TV that are set in the second world war and I was wondering if any of them are worth watching

    Sword of honor
    Foyle's war
Colditz story (has the guy who played captain winters in band of brothers)
    Island at war

'Foyle's War' is the best of a mediocre bunch in my opinion. The Colditz series was laughable.

A lot of those I didn't see in Australia.

We had shows like Silent Service from the states in the late 50's & 60's and Combat with Vic Morrow and Rick Jason - Garrisons Gorilla's etc etc.

Of course we did have Dad's Army.

They will probably cross-over to Australia as the last two were rather recent UK productions.

Sword of Honour - wasn't that an Australian drama series with the guy from Anzacs, set in the Vietnam War? I recall it being shown late at night on CH4 when I was about 14-15.

Foyle's War is okay - typical Sunday night TV. Not too demanding but just a crime series set in 1940.

Island at War - one massive set of cliches and of dubious accuracy.

Colditz - if that was the one shown recently I did not see it.

The one set in Vietnam If I recall is "The Odd Angry Shot" with Graham Kennedy who past away last month.

"The Anzacs" with Paul Hogan (put another shrimp on the barbie & Crocodile Dundee fame") was a great series but not shown again in Australia. I have tried for ages to track it down and find when it would be aired again.......no luck.

They ran a badly cut-up version of "ANZACS" in America once. It was annoying...clearly all the good parts had been cut out. It looked like a terrific series, though.

I just got on to a copy of "ANZACS" (3 DISKS) locally and ordered it. Been trying for years.

The original show was a mini series of over 500 minutes in 6 episodes. I have heard about the condensed version in the states and heard terrible reports. The part that would have been lost to the Americans was the formulation of a bond between the NZedders and the Aussies who were forging names for themselves under the orders of British Generals.

I got a copy (justifiable 'cos it is not in Region 2 or 0!) made for me a year or so back. Just last week watched a few episodes again.

If you ever had Last of the Summer Wine shown in Australia (three old blokes wandering around and philosophising in Yorkshire) the incidental music for comedic scenes on Anzacs is eerily familiar.

Interestingly, the chap who played Martin Barrington in Anzacs was also in another Australian film I saw ages ago, playing a gay guy in a leather cap.

After many years of searching I recently got the DVD. Still think that its fantastic. I recognised situations and characters from real life. At some points i even thought that i could smell the mouldy canvas!!

I was going to recommend it however Vietnam is out of the realm of this forum.

However you have given it the thumbs up without any goading.

It is a great movie and true to life.

If anyone can make a copy of the complete ANZACs mini-series DVD for me (that I can watch in America), I will be grateful, and will supply DVDs.

    Hi Kiwiwriter,

See what I can do when I get mine.

What do you need for USA play?

If someone else has your compatibility now......please advise. I will hold off until confirmed.

could well be, one of the characters had been a deserter from the Buffs, and who was challenged by an officer from his former regiment, then made good in 1918 when he was a RSM by leading a charge against a german position which was witnessed by the BUffs officer.

I am sure it was called Empire. I also remember the Opening Titles had the AIF badge

We use NTSC around here for tapes, and we're "Region 1" for DVDs, I believe.

    THANKS!!!!! :)
