British advance after Beda Fomm

Discussion in 'North Africa & the Med' started by jwsleser, Nov 6, 2025.

The question of what an advance after Beda Fomm might look like was raised in another forum. One poster provided the following information.

I have asked the poster for his sources and I am awaiting his response. I didn't discover any info on this in Playfair, while Long's To Benghazi had a few bits on pp.276–277.

Does anyone recognize the information and the likely sources?

Never seen it, so I would say someone went to Kew and pulled the relevant documents.

Interesting. Have you got the 2 Armd Div war diary - there are a lot of warning orders etc to 3 and 5 RTR.

Can you provide a link to the discussion?

Yes I have the 2.AD diaries for January-February 41. February is a bit spotty. I haven't spent much time with them as of yet. I don't have March.

Discussion started as a 'What If' Italy didn't invade Greece in Oct 40. Discussion is at:

Was Tripoli port equipped with cranes to offload vehicles? I read recently an article about the Italian merchant marine and references were made to some ports had no cranes or similar.

Tripoli was fine. There's plenty of pictorial evidence for this. Also, a lot of the modern merchants had their own cranes.

Okay thanks. Mark is rumbunctious and doesn't suffer fools gladly. He used to post here. He is however extremely solid and if he says that's in the documents, then that's in the documents.

I think all those people going 'Tripoli in 90 days' really don't have a grasp on the tenuous logistics and the risks that were taken to get to Beda Fomm.

Can't rememberwhere the below is from, but I guess it's the stuff a planner's nightmares are made from.

Agree. I noticed that he had previously posted here. He and I have crossed swords a few times. His research is solid.

Yes you sent me the Q documents back in February 2022. I had reread them a few days ago. Not only was the LOC a problem, but the condition of the material forward was shot.
