Wrong ! The company number was worn on the uniform..... Ours was a white 49 on a blue square background, all the units wore their numbers on the upper sleeves, the same as on the vehicles.
As to the stripes on the sleeves denoting brigade they are as follows
    8th Brigade one stripe
185 brigade two stripes 9th brigade three stripes
That is the the precedence of landing and of who was what.
    8th first
    185 second
    and 9th third
Or they were when I was there.... So unless there has been a catastrophic change in history? That is the order of precedence
    Cheers

PS to prove I am right about the numbers on uniforms, I have a picture of the company in Weert circa september 1944
I still have a uniform with the whie 49 sewn on

Only by the sappers Brian, the PBI didn't.

    8th Brigade one stripe
185 brigade two stripes 9th brigade three stripes

Sorry Brian, still don't agree with you on that one.
as I said before check that pic in Assault Division I mentioned in post #7.
    RUR chap with 2 stripes.

The order they landed on D-Day has nothing to do with their order of precedence.

Yes they may have on D-Day but that has nothing to do with the Divisional Order of Battle and the precedence of brigades in it.

I'm not wishing to disagree with a veteran who was actually there, but I do know for certain the the RUR wore 2 Rifle green arm of service strips.

    8th Brigade was senior
    9th Brigade was intermediate
    185th Brigade was Junior.

This is according to the RUR museum chaps.
