Just found myself in the awful position of having run out of books about the GPW to read!!! Have just ordered these, any feedback/personal reviews of them? Amazon.co.uk: Russia's War: R.J. Overy: Books Amazon.co.uk: Ivan's War: Inside The Red Army, 1939-45: Catherine Merridale: Books
Have also ordered The Story of Zoya and Shura, by Zoya's Mother, L. Kosmodemyanskaya. There is a full transcript on-line here: The Story of Zoya and Shura but I have ordered the Moscow 1953 (English Language) version. Can't wait for that one to arrive!

Overy: Books Amazon.co.uk: Ivan's War: Inside The Red Army, 1939-45: Catherine Merridale: Books Ivans War is really hard going and its not an easy read but it is worth it. I am glad to have read it courtesy of Mr Owen D (Thanks Owen!)
Oh..er..umm. I found half way through Ivans war I was having increasing senses of dejavu....not only is there really much new in the way of insights that havnt been covered in other recent books, what "insights" that are put forward in Ivans war seem to get repeated ad nauseum all the way through.Sorry for the negative waves ... Havent read the other one though
Sorry for the negative waves ... Righto, Oddball I'll let you know what I think when I've finished it. What would you recommend, out of interest?
I started a thread on Ivan's War. Our Russian member T34 hated it and the author. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/books-movies/10447-ivans-war-catherine-merridale.html
Id say its a good starter book on the RKKA but thats about as much praise as Im giving it. As to other recomendations Zoya, not sure, there havnt been that many that pass the full russian veterens test yet. Tank Rider is a modern classic. I tend to do most of my research via the old interweb.
The web's good for finding stuff out, I use it a lot, but you can't beat reading a real book...something about words on paper which feels totally different from words on a screen!

It arrived...fantastic book to hold in your hand, with that really old book smell. Will scan some of it to show you later. Well chuffed! Very hard to get hold of!
