Thank you for the snippet of Major Kempster's award of the George Cross as always with citations - never the full story of the action - but had this been in the face of the enemy - it would have been the V.C.- which was the whole point of

the G.C. - for heroic actions - with no enemy present......he was sadly missed by all of "A" squadron 145th RAC

    Cheers

    Tom,

More interesting than any official citation is, as ever, the recollection of anyone close at the time. So, to read your initial post is far more illuminating, most importantly reflecting the respect felt by members of his unit at the time, as well as that still felt by veterans. It underlines what remembrance really means, the award being secondary. Happy that this photo made a link to someone connected. Obviously a man worthy of more than his scant citation.

    All the very best,

many thanks for the photo and skimpy citation for Major Kempster G.C. - many Veterans of the Regiment will remember him with great joy as leading us by example notwithstanding the personal danger to self

    Cheers

Hutchie - sorry to say I didnt photograph Shackleton's grave but if I end up there again will put another post out and check on these historis ones to sweep up any such requests.

Tom - glad that Major Kempster's actions are remembered by his comrades. I see wikipedia has a photo of him and some details of his medal

    Hi Clive/Skip,
New to this but wondering if you did get the photo of Charles Reginald's grave? If so, I would be really grateful if you could send me a copy.
    Thanks,

    Hello Graeme,

Sadly I don't and at the moment do not have any plans to go back so your best bet might be TWGPP online.

If anyone has a photo of the headstone of Sapper Thomas Noel Williams of 702 Const Coy RE buried in Bone Cemetery I'd be grateful for a copy I could use in one of my YouTube videos. The 19 year old hailed from Falmouth in Cornwall where he worked as a carpenter before joining the army. He was also in the Falmouth Home Guard.

Plus if anyone has the Regimental War Diary or any histories that can shed any light on how he died I'd be grateful.
Given the date I assume it would have been in the push towards towns like Medjez.

Hi, total newbie here. I'm here tracing my Grandfather who died near Bone in Dec 1943. Corporal Sid Ferris, 10th Battalion 'Tower Hamlets' He is buried at Bone and I was wondering how difficult it is to travel there and get to the cemetery? I've heard it's not the safest place to go but I'm very interested in trying - perhaps even a road trip with my Dad, who was only one when Sid died. Shame I didn't know about this site earlier as I would have loved a hi-res shot of his headstone as compared to the CWGC one on the internet. If anyone has any advice on going to Algeria then I'd appreciate it very much. thanks Glen.

    Hello Glenn and welcome.
Firstly the photo you mean is from a website that is photographing all CWGC graves. They blur them out because they charge £4 for a high res copy.

Details below re travel to Algeria and it doesnt make a visit seem appealing .

    Algeria travel advice

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to areas within:

    • 30km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger
    • 30km of the border with Tunisia in the provinces of Illizi and Ouargla and in the Chaambi mountains area
The FCO advise against all but essential travel to within 30km of the remainder of the border with Tunisia.

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Algeria, including kidnappings. Terrorist attacks have focussed on the Algerian state, but attacks could be indiscriminate and include foreigners. There’s also a risk that lone actors could target foreigners. You should be vigilant at all times and take additional security precautions, especially in: towns and cities; the southern, Libyan and Tunisian border areas; rural and mountainous areas in the north; and the Sahara.
The Algerian authorities devote considerable resources to the safety of foreign visitors. In cities there’s a clear security presence, which can feel intrusive. Authorities will want to know your travel plans when travelling outside major cities and may assign police or gendarmes to protect you.

    Hi CL1
Thanks for replying so quickly. Wow, that's not exactly an advert for tourism is it haha. OK, may have to rethink the plans a little - thanks for the snip. Also thanks for the inscription text. That's more than I realised was written on the headstone. I'll have to think of another way to pay my respects.
    Kind regards
    Glen.

If you check out the CWGC record Casualty - it often contains details such as where they might have been first buried, whether the family have asked to bury the person themselves, what the family want inscribed on the tombstone - if you scroll down the link above you will find:

Grave concentration report (he was moved at some point to Bone from another resting place)

and also the inscription requested by the family - as in CL1's post above
